DANet - HI-RES (2x) shoes patch released!

Postby DANet on Tue Mar 16, 2004 12:42 pm

This patch upgrades EA's default shoes to a hi-res (2x) shoe format and enables the user to import hi-res 256x256 shoes into their game.

Notes:

A. All player shoe, eye, mouth, and headband textures are closely linked in NBA Live 2004. In order to enjoy the benefits of hi-res (2x) shoes you MUST also upgrade all eye, mouth, and headband textures to the 2x texture format. This patch automatically upgrades all of EA's default shoe, eye, mouth, and headband textures to conform with the 2x texture format. In addition, this patch automatically upgrades any customart shoe, eye, mouth, and headband patches that you have installed in your game at the time of this patch installation.

B. This patch resizes all customart shoe, eye, mouth, and headband patches that you have installed in your game to work with the 2x texture format. You will need to manually import hi-res images into your customart patches to enjoy the full benefits of this hi-res texture patch. You will NOT notice any loss in texture quality in the game if you choose not to import hi-res images into some/all of your customart patches.

C. Any shoe, eye, mouth, and headband patches that you install after installing this patch should conform with the 2x texture format or they will not be displayed correctly in the game. You can upgrade any additional shoe, eye, mouth, and headband patches that you wish to install using my 2x shoe upgrade kit. The 2x shoe upgrade kit also contains information for patchers wishing to create and distribute patches using the 2x texture format.

D. This patch allows you to choose to install the hi-res (2x) shoes files directly into the game VIV files or by using NBA Live's customart feature. A backup is created for all files affected by the installation.

Installation procedure for the hi-res (2x) shoes patch:

1. Download and run the DANet-2x_shoes_v10.exe file.
2. OPTIONAL: Import hi-res images into any customart shoe, eye, mouth, and headband patches (bsho*.fsh, beye.fsh, bmou.fsh, and hbnd.fsh files) that you have installed in your game.
3. Run NBA Live 2004 and enjoy...

You can get the hi-res (2x) shoe patch and the hi-res (2x) shoe upgrade kit in the NBA Live 2004 "Misc. Downloads" section at:

Wow DANet, props for figuring this out, that's great!

Just wondering, do the shoes look a lot better in game?

There's definitely a big difference having a 2x format, shoes look more detailed. I'm now adding a lot of Steve's and Yohance's bigger resolution shoes into the game. I hope Dahl makes a 2x version of his Air Zoom 2k3 cuz' it's the best 2k3 patch.

:D Thanks DANet!!! :D

Sweet man (Y)
I've been wating for this since last thursday :)

I'll maybe start on a patch that makes all of EA's shoes a lil darker and sharper... They look better in game then... A good idea?

I must be missing something here...

I installed your patch and everything went right. Next I decided to install Tony's Ron Artest and as I expected the eye included in Tony's patch weren't showing. So I followed the instructions and tried to resize the beye to 128x128 with EAGraph (since now I've used this tool only for importing shoes, so I'm not an expert) but it didn't work either.

I noticed that my new beye resized is 128x128 RGB248 and the one which should work (like the template in your tool) is instead 128x128 RGB96. So what am I doing wrong when saving the resized file? Should I change some options in the windows that appears after SAVE AS FSH?

Thanks a lot. Great tool!

Here is a comparison that Andreas Dahl posted. The quality increase is definitely noticable.

Did you install the patch using the VIV method? It seems that sometimes patch files don't get inserted into the VIV's properly by EAZip. Try using the customart installation...

Upgrade procedure

This is the procedure you can use to upgrade your patches to conform with the 2x format. There are other ways using various combinations of tools such as NFSHTool, FshEd, Photoshop etc. but I will describe a technique that uses EAGraph and FshEd (tools that are easily accessible and free).

You can perform these steps for any bsho, beye, hbnd, and bmou patch you wish to upgrade. My example will upgrade a beye.fsh file.

1. Open the lo-res (regular size) beye.fsh using EAGraph.
2. Click on the image name in the left hand column to bring up the eye image.
3. Select: EDIT-->RESAMPLE and enter a height and width that is 2x larger than the original dimensions (width=128 height=128).
4. Select: FILE-->SAVE AS and save the file as a BMP.
5. Open the hi-res (2x) beye.fsh contained in the shoe upgrade kit using FshEd.
6. Select: OBJECT-->IMPORT and then select the NEW button on the top of the pop-up window. Select the BMP file you saved in step 4 and select the UPDATE button.
7. Select: FILE-->SAVE AS and save your upgraded beye.fsh patch.
8. Install you upgraded beye.fsh patch in the appropriate NBA Live customart folder.
9. Load up NBA Live 2004 and enjoy...

A question DANet. I checked in your index.fsh's:
Yuo had:
    MBP+2 60 x2 256 256 {0 0 0}
But all the times i've made 256'ers, I've had:
    MBP+2 60 x3 256 256 {0 0 0}

That mades my have 16x16 aswell.
Does that realy matter, will we be able to even see that?

Send me the file and I'll check it out...

FYI...I did an "analysis" of some different FSH files for someone at nbalive.org. You might gain some insight from that too...
