I find it funny that for someone who doesn't read himself, ZanShadow is being hard on Lean about the thread title.

Duncan is still better. Dwight is somehow becoming Shaq 2.0 in Orlando.

I can roll with the Duncan is better card if you take purely skill into consideration. Take away Dwight Howards' athleticism and bring it down to a Duncan-like level and he's probably a fringe bench player, if not even in the league.

Duncan is good but not Dwight good anymore. Skill wise, of course Duncan's better, but it gets ugly when you count physicality into a comparison.

it also gets ugly in the Playoffs when you need Dwight Howard to be serviceable as a low-post scorer.

I don't think the Magic would be worse off if they had Tim Duncan as their center. They may not have the best regular season record, but come playoff time they would become a much, much, much better fit against the Boston team that whooped them last season.

Long-term I'd still take Dwight, but as a pure basketball player right now, meaning all aspects of the game (skill, basketball IQ, athleticism, moxie) I think Tim Duncan is better.

Right now I guess you could make a case for Dwight Howard based on how far he could go...

But Duncan is the best power forward of all time...if I had a choice between the two, Duncan is an automatic lock.

Fair enough. Reading your previous post, it seemed you were suggesting that David Robinson was the greatest power forward of all time.

I did not say he was a pf. Maybe its time for a history lesson for yal. Robinson and Duncan played at the same time. Robinson was the center and Duncan was the pf. I paid more attention to Robinson than Duncan. When Robinson retired i lost interest in the Spurs. Thus the phrase that I am stuck in the Robinson era.

I think we're all aware of that. As I said, reading your previous post I took it to mean that you were suggesting Robinson was the greatest power forward of all time, which I think we can all agree he is not given that he was not a power forward. Clearly, I misunderstood that post and what you were trying to say.

Despite the fact that you "focused" on Robinson more than Duncan, that doesn't eliminate the fact that Duncan was the best player on the team from his rookie year on.

I wouldn't go that far. Robinson was still pretty freaking amazing in the first two seasons. And there's an argument to be made they were pretty close in the next two years as well. Most of that had to do with Robinson's decline from aging as well. There's a serious and very strong case that Prime Robinson is better than Prime Duncan.

I can roll with that point. The broken foot that led to him missing the 97 season def. had an impact on his decline. I guess his drop was so dramatic in terms of going from great to solid made Duncan's rise to supremacy of the team and league look a lot better.

He shook off the foot injury, you have to remember in Duncan's rookie season Robinson was already 32 because of his Naval duty. He had only once played less than 80 games and logged over 21,000 season minutes along with another near seasons worth of playoff minutes by then. His per game numbers declined "fast" because they didn't have to play him 40 minutes a night anymore, and Popovich immediately cut him down to just 32 per game once Duncan proved himself. He also willingly gave up shots to Duncan and the other players, and started to conserve for the playoffs and even close games more often so he could do things like grab 17 boards in his last game when needed instead of expending for 20+ points when it wasn't needed.

Duncan has been doing the same thing, if i remember right, the past year or two. Maybe Tiago Splitter will be the next star big man for them.

:eh:

IMO DeJuan Blair is better than Splitter.

Spurs started to look like a crap. The oldest team. What will they do with +30 year old stars and no young fellas except Hill and Blair?
