Coney Island basketball star Lance Stephenson - a second-round Indiana Pacers pick in the June NBA draft - was busted Sunday for pushing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, cops said.

Stephenson, 19, a legendary player at Brooklyn's Abraham Lincoln High School, roughed up Jasmine Williams, 21, in the stairwell of her Brooklyn apartment building about 5 a.m., according to police.

The 6-foot-5 rookie point guard's blows sent Williams tumbling head-first down 10 steps, requiring her to be treated at a hospital for injuries to her head and neck, cops said.

Stephenson, who played one year at Cincinnati before getting drafted 40th overall by the Pacers, was hit with a charge of third-degree assault. He was awaiting arraignment last night.

He had been considered a first-round talent but dropped to the second round due to off-the-court issues, including a 2008 bust for sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl inside of Lincoln High School.

Poor Larry Bird

Brandon Rush of the Indiana Pacers was suspended for five games by the NBA on Friday for violating the league's drug agreement, while Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings and Kenny Hasbrouck of the Miami Heat drew suspensions for driving offenses.

Pacers president Larry Bird said in a statement that the organization would support Rush.

Evans, the NBA's Rookie of the Year, was suspended without pay for one game for pleading no contest to reckless driving in California. He averaged 20.1 points last season.

Hasbrouck, a former Siena guard, was suspended without pay for two games for pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated in New York.

Rush's suspension was the latest blow to Indiana's attempts to clean up its image.

Most recently, second-round draft pick Lance Stephenson was arrested earlier this month in New York on assault, menacing and harassment charges. Prosecutors said he pushed his girlfriend down a flight of stairs before grabbing her and hitting her head on the bottom step. The Pacers have not announced how they will deal with that incident.

Hollinger noted that Hasbrouck might be the first player to ever get a suspension who may never play in the league. He apparently had a really low chance at making the team unless he surprised everyone.

I hope he puts his game together and joins some NBA team out of the D-League in like five years and has to miss the first two games. That'd be an amusing historical fact.
