So why do online players quit when they're about to lose?

I don't get it, what is there to gain? Doesn't a disconnect count as a loss? The worst is when some chump tries the "cheats" to win (you all know what they are), still is about to lose in the face of honest to goodness basketball, and the quits. It's depressing more than it is annoying -- whatever happened to sportsmanship?

The one time I quit in NBA 2001 was in the 1st quarter and I was up by 10. The guy's connection was horrible. He must have been using a 2400 baud modem or something. The framerate was giving me a headache.

I offered a draw but he called me a little b*tch. The nerve of the jack@ss.

It's bad sportsmanship, plain and simple. I don't have the connection to play online games, but I seem to recall with NBA Live 2003 some disconnections being counted as draws - is that still the case in NBA Live 2004? That might be another reason why some less than honest online players choose a disconnect over a defeat.

Seriously, take a it like a man (or woman) even if you're only 13yo (see poll on age of visitors to this site, hehe). The only time I ever quit, my better half made it home from work early so I had to leave the game.

Whatever happened to the age poll, anyway? (or did I dream about it?!?)

You couldnt draw a game in 03, if the other player quit his/her Disc rating would increase and you would get nothing. 2004 online is a mess, everybody is getting a huge amount of connection errors. Everybody accusing everybody else of 'Quitting', if u get an error 1st or 2nd quarter(regardless of the score) its a connection error, if your up by 15 in the 4th with 10 secs left then thats a quit and very sad.

I detest quitters.. and they are a lot of them..
Can anyone confirm that if a quit will give the win to the person who doesnt quit. ??

I have had to dumb down my game on many occasion to stop people from quitting. I usually try to let them come back to give them hope of winning. If you beat them too badly early on they quit on you.

Solution is check disonnect rate before you play them.
When i host, i make sure i chat with them before play.. IF they dont chat i dont start the game. I do to make sure i get their name.. ( I have a quitter list)

I quite once because the lag was horrible... I was winning, too. But it was impossible to make a jumpshot, rebound, or play defense (I just let the computer do it.) I got all of my points from freethrows and layups.

most of the time people quit cuz their opp always are freestyling and dunking ............makin the game too fake to play. i played online a handful of times and all everyone wanted to do was dunk. it got too fake so i never played online again. EA needs to come up with some online sliders for fair play something similar to Madden.

I don't so much mind the dunking. The pro-hopping to get right under the basket is a joke, as is stealing of the inbounds pass. One day EA Sports will figure out that different kinds of passes would be nice (e.g. a lob pass to get over the guy guarding the inbounder / inboundee).

Playing online is a boring, a waste of time and complete horse shit. The servers that EA use may as well be scrap. I understand why its free this year. I have been playing UT04 online and in some games there are 30+ ppl and anyone whom might be spectating and frigging audio channels connected so u can chat with a mic ingame and there is no slow down, no lag and NO connection errors , im running the game 1600x1200 everything max. Nobody can tell me that LIVE requires more bandwidth then a huge set up like UT. The fact is EA has just cut a few more corners. Im gonna try one of these LIVE online leagues see how that is, but i doubt it will be any better (N)

Im gonna try one of these LIVE online leagues see how that is, but i doubt it will be any better

leagues is the way to go if your a clean player. in leagues thers rules you have to follow and im in 3 leagues and rules and players in the league undestrand this isnt EASO and play clean ball. every league im in stress the importance of playin real ball theres also warning for people who like to pro hop all game you get 1 warning and you do it again your out. if i was you i try leagues much better then EASO. i play the same way in leagues and on EASO and im rakned top 25 i beat the worst of cheesers even the top ranked players.[/quote]

That sound just as shit as EASO, u cant dictate to somebody how there supposed to play just cos the other person cant defend it. I do not use the pro hop every time down court and i have never played any 1 who has either, but i have heard ppl complain about it. My advise to them is simple, PLAY UR OWN D, if u pro hop against me i will take the charge or block that weak ass shit 7 1/2 times out of 10. Now IMO playing straight would be this, playing ur own D, not running a full court press from the opening tip, not standing to take a charge midcourt constantly, not pump faking like a like a jackinabox until u get a foul called, these are called EXPLOITES, ppl exploiting the online game in order to win. I dont even really think stealing the inbound pass is an exploite, i only ever get the ball stolen when im rushing or not concerntrating, most of the time its piss easy to beat and always leads to an easy basket. Everything else is just the game, freestyle, dunking and prohop :?:

Those of u that complain about about freestyle and dunking making the game FAKE, get a grip, the whole thing is fake, its a bloody computer game, but that aside REAL players dunk and REAL players cross the ball over!

I'm not even gonna lie to ya I quit on someone before. This dude kept pausing the game talking shit and telling me my computer was slow and causing the lag in the game(Even though he hosted the game and my ping was lower than his btw) Anytime I'd mess up he'd pause the game and talk more shit. He was doing all the cheap play he could: Stealing the inbounds pass, drawing charges at halfcourt, bumping my player; pro hopping in the paint waiting for me to jump and getting a easy layup, pump faking at the 3 point line; Just about all the fake bullshit thats possible to do in the game.

I think the game has its flaws but its not much that proper sliders on EASO wouldn't help. I think they should lower the pass interceptions and the on ball physical defense and a few other ones to start with. If you really think about it Who plays with the game whether it be exhibition or franchise mode with the default sliders. I'd guess not many. So why would I want to play someone online with the sliders set to default.
If you play a game ip to ip you are forced to use the host's game settings.
I played a friend online like this for awhile it was extremely better.

All in all I think that the way the game is set up now with the pro play rules with default sliders sucks. Also players being able to edit there rosters and cheat sucks as well. If the players rosters don't match you shouldn't be able to play imo. And all the bumping that goes on in the backcourt is turning this game into football. Hell they dont have this much collision detection in Madden.

p.s Oh yeah b4 I forget that guy that was talking shit of course was playin with Dallas (as all of the players do) and he edited Nowitzki and Nash and turned both their FG and 3Pt ratings up to 99. If you think thats fucked up I told my friend about it and he played someone later that night
that had turned every player on the Lakers ratings up to 99 in every catergory!!! So yOu know he noticed something was wrong when he noticed Shaq standing at the 3 point line with a 3 icon draining 3's on his ass

Its the offensive player that causes the bump not the Defence, if ur getting the bump effect alot its because ur moving into a player in the defensive stance. Check it out u will see, play 1on1, but set the 2nd player as the Keyboard, wait until he has the ball and ur on D and u try and bump him. A pump fake under the basket is good basketball fundamentals and u should not complain, but all that shit out a the 3pt line is just pathetic and turns the game into something other than a basketball sim.

I admit I'm unfamiliar with the code of ethics regarding online play, but how is pump faking at the three point line cheap or unrealistic? It's not unrealistic for players to fake a shot outside the paint.

What im refering to are those ppl that stand there and do nothing but pump fake until the D forces a "chuck up shot" or a foul is called and its always the foul that seems to be called. Its very annoying and very deliberate, those that do it know the cpu will blow the foul and then they will get to the free throwline.

Well yes, that isn't realistic and kind of cheap. I thought you were simply referring to using a pump fake on the perimeter to get your defender in the air, then eluding them for an open shot. Thanks for clearing that up.

Don't remind me, it's happened to me too many times! What amazes me is that there are some people that use one particular exploit. They think that they're aren't exploiting anything because it's "how I play". I'm tempted to say that the way they play is lame, and if they're going to "cheat" they might as well cheat all the way.

One thing I've noticed from alot of multiplayer play is when a guy uses the pro hop alot and you just bump him in mid air fouls are not called alot of the time.
