double team defense strategy?

Mon Feb 23, 2004 11:30 am

Hi! I would just like to ask you guys regarding your opinions on setting defensive matchups to ALWAYS double team and with HIGH pressure on the CPU's star players. Would you suggest this? And if so, up to how many of the CPU's players should I set the "always" double to? Thanks.

Always double a player who is bound to light you up. I suggest manually calling for a double team when the CPU gets the ball into the post. You don't want to be double teaming everyone on the court, as you'll be running your players all over the place, opening up opportunities for your opponent to score.

I don't use the double team option in Strategy all that often, I mainly just call for a double team using the Quick Plays. But if you want to use it, set it to one or two players maximum. There's no need to consistently send a double team to each of the CPU's players when they get the ball. Sending one at thyour opponent's main offensive threat should be enough, though sometimes you might want to double team their next best scorer.

For a team like the Mavericks that has a lot of scorers at its disposal, I suggest double teaming the one or two players who are giving you the most trouble, and using one of your big men on defense. This will allow you to grab a lot of rebounds and step into the paint if your perimeter players allow the opponent to penetrate. If you're good at playing perimeter defense though, you might want to control your guards from time to time to make sure you contest long range shots.

I will just play the game for a few minutes, and then I can realize who is doing hot by shooting very well on the opposite team, and then at next timeout, I will double team 'always' PLUS 'high' pressure on these players.

This is a strategy that can shut down the on-fire opponent, and you will immediately see their cooling down!

I also use 'double team' at quickplay only, since I face same problem as Administrator said if I set double team as the defensive strategy always...ie. you often have some other opponents wide wide open and in team like Mavericks you suffer a lot with Nash's, Finley's, Nowitzki's, and Jamison's 3 pointers and long shots... way far from justified to have 'always double teaming' them.

I sometimes use 'double team' at quick play by allowing two of my CPU controlled teammates to do the double teaming, while I control a third player to go there to 'triple team'...the success rate is not low and maybe you would like to try this at times to turnover your opponent :)
