How to rate a player...

Postby weed manus on Wed Feb 11, 2004 7:10 am

FG = FG% x (FGM/G + FGM/min)
3PT = 3PT% x (3PTM/G + 3PTM/min)
FT = FT%
STL = (STL/48) x SPG
PAS = (AST/48) x AST/G x AST/TO
BLK = (BLK/48) x BPG
REB = (REB/48) x RPG
D.Awareness = (STLR+BLKR+D.RebR) /3
O.Awareness = (PASR+FGR+3PTR+FTR+O.RebR) /5
Primacy = FGM/min
Hardiness = PF/min

x - multiply
/ - divide
PF - fouls or penalties for
48 - minutes in 4 quaters
3 - catergories that were added
5 - catergories that were added

Primacy = FGM/min

Shouldn't it be "FGA/min" ? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Primacy how much they shoot the ball (fieldgoal attempts) but not necessarily hits the ball :?:

This is Chris Bosh's 3pt. Rating...

0.09/min <-3pt.rs made divided by minutes played
+ 0.07/g <-3pt.rs made divided by games played
----------
0.16
x .375 <-3pt.%
----------
0.060 <-3pt.Rating

Although, I will add that it sometimes isn't consistent from player to player...look for the best answer possible

If you can improve on this please do!!
I can't seem to get accurate rebound ratings...Although I'm soon gonna rate 'em as they are...eg. 10.3 drpg = 99
9.6 drpg = 96
8.3 drpg = 83

the rebound thing doesn't work.....maybe on def. but not on off.

Example:
Elton Brand
oreb=4.7
dreb=7.0

so Elton Brand one of the best offense rebound would be 47 in of rebounds

and when u divide the FG and 3PTM with mins is that mins per game or total mins in the season

Here are a couple of formulas I been useing.

Primacy = FGA/min + FTA/min
This takes into account players that do a lot of their scoring from the free throw line. You still have to set the plays for the other team, and defend the crap outta the opposing point guard.

Hardiness = % of games played, based on 82 games in a regular season or 50 in the lock-out season.

Stamina = % of minutes played, based on 48 minutes in a regular game.

Lets Use Michael Jordans 1997-1998 Season As An Example

FG = FG% x (FGM/G + FGM/min)=
.465 x (881/82 10 +881/3,181)=
.465 x (10+.276)=
.465 x (10.276)= 4.77834

3PT = 3PT% x (3PTM/G + 3PTM/min)=
.238 x (30/82 + 30/3,181)=
.238 x (.365 + .009)=
.238 x (.374)= .089012

FT = FT%= .784

STL = (STL/48) x SPG=
(141/480) x 1.72=
(.293) x 1.72= .50396

PAS = (AST/48) x AST/G x AST/TO=
(283/48) x 283/82 x 283/185=
(5.895) x 3.451 x 1.529=
26.238 x 1.529= 40.117902

BLK = (BLK/48) x BPG=
(45/48) x .55=
(.937) x .55= .515625

REB = (REB/48) x RPG=
(475/48) x ??? (WTF is RPG?)

D.Awareness = (STLR+BLKR+D.RebR) /3=
(????+????+?????) /3=

O.Awareness = (PASR+FGR+3PTR+FTR+O.RebR) /5=
(????+???+????+???+?????) /5

Primacy = FGM/min=
881/3181= .276

Hardiness = PF/min=
151/3181= .047

now what does all that mean? i dunno u figure it our

Do these look right?

Block rtg ~ blocks per min / 0.00108

Steal rtg ~ steals per min / 0.0008

Oreb rtg ~ Orebs per min / 0.0015

Dreb rtg ~ Drebs per min / 0.0027

Try these:
(I assumed values on what would be a 99 based on 48mins, so you can tweak it based on your view of the NBA by changing the number to divide it by)

Steal = (spg/(mpg/48)) / 3.5
Block = (bpg/(mpg/48)) / 5.5
Off Reb = (orpg/(mpg/48)) / 6.5
Def Reb = (drpg/(mpg/48)) / 14
Stamina = mpg / 42
Primacy = ((fga/G)/(mpg/48)) / 27
3Pts = 3pt% / .47
RawPass = (apg/(mpg/48)) / 11
Pass = (RawPass + Primacy) / 2

For example:
(Kobe Bryant 2003-04 season as of 40 games)

Steal = (1.75/(36.7/48)) / 3.5 = 0.65
Block = (0.33/(36.7/48)) / 5.5 = 0.08
Off Reb = (1.7/(36.7/48)) / 6.5 = 0.34
Def Reb = (3.2/(36.7/48)) / 14 = 0.30
Stamina = 36.7 / 42 = 0.87
Primacy = ((670/40)/(36.7/48)) / 27 = 0.81
3Pts = .355 / .47 = 0.76
RawPass = (4.6/(36.7/48)) / 10 = 0.60
Pass* = (.60+.81)/2 = .71

Keep in mind you have to multiply the answers by 100 (duh)
*This is what I actually use & the reason for this is to balance pass ability with pass opportunities.

It's tough to rate other things like Off. & Def. Awareness cause Im not really sure how EA determines these. I wish they would put detailed descriptions of all ratings in the manual. From what I gather, OA is a player's off the ball movement? And DA is simply On-ball defensive ability? It all depends...

I agree about Off and Def Awareness. EA probably relies more on scouting reports than stats for those.

Some questions/suggestions -
Should turnovers also be used for determining Passing?
How about including FTA for Primacy? Shaq would have more FGA if he didn't get fouled as often.

I guess turnovers can be used to determine both dribbling and passing. i would tend to think more turnovers are caused by dribbling too much rather than making too many bad passes. That's why Iverson leads the league in TO's.

I'm trying to keep the formulas as simple as possible. I try to edit as much players as I can and that's a LOT of them. That's a good point about Shaq though. I'll have to consider that.

The number of possessions to which a free throw attempt corresponds has been estimated to be in the 0.4-0.44 range.

Here's my proposed formula for Primacy:

Primacy = ((fga + 0.42*fta) / mpg) * 1.58
