2010 Free Agency Discussion Thread

Postby The X on Thu Jul 01, 2010 9:44 pm

I just wanted a thread where I could discuss rumours, lower level signings & so on without having to make numerous threads (e.g. Bosh to Houston, No wait, Bosh to Miami, etc).

So first thing is apparently the Hawks are going to throw another max contract at a good number 2

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=A ... buzz063010

I know that there are teams stupid enough (yes, I'm looking at you Chicago & New York) to pay him max, but come on, Joe bloody Johnson for the next 6 years at $20 mill per year

I guess this goes in here?
The Wolves have signed Nikola Pekovic, their second round pick in the 2008 Draft, to a $13 million contract over three seasons.

Pekovic averaged 14.8 points per game last season.

Yep. Seems the Wolves want a Euro tag-team centre combo (Darko & Peko). Maybe they're trying to sell Rubio on the virtues of Minnesota. Actually I think it's more to do with Kahn's philosophies.

Joe Johnson is getting paid roughly $20m/year? Well, that just kills the Hawks' chances of building a good team, when $20m of a roughly $60m cap is taken up by a relatively mediocre go-to player.

I believe LBJ will end up as a Cav again.. mark my words haha..for Wade, he's likely to stay.. for Bosh, Toronto is looking for a sign-and-trade since Bosh's return to Toronto is uncertain. previously Miami offered Michael Beasley, Mario Chalmers and Joel Anthony in a sign-and-trade for Bosh.. Toronto is uninterested though..but they would consider a $ 16 Million trade exemption and the return of its first round pick from Miami in the 2009 Jermaine O'Neal trade for a potential Bosh move. well let's see what will happen in few days...

Sofo Schortsianitis is taking part in the Clippers summer camp ,and as it seems he will be in the teams roster.
I believe that u know him,as Big Sofo is the one who is called 'Baby Shaq" cause of his appearance and body type.A nice step for him, though he should have gone earlier there. He was drafted at 2003 by the Clips

anyway.. here's the first FA signing on this day..

Bucks, Gooden Agree To Five-Year Deal

Drew Gooden has reached agreement on a five-year, $32 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Gooden has played for eight teams in eight seasons, and hopes to find some stability with the fast-rising Bucks.

Bucks general manager John Hammond and agent Dan Fegan struck quick on Thursday and cut a deal to help solidify Milwaukee's frontline.

I think if James stays in Cleveland, 5 teams at least will overpay for mediocre guys to fill out their needs. Though if the Heat don't get Lebron I'd like if the Heat get just Bosh with Wade and not overpay for a Joe Johnson or a Carlos Boozer, who aren't max players. Then they could re-sign Haslem and Dorell and don't have to settle for 9 min contract guys.

Next to Wade and Bosh, my attention is towards Korver and see what he goes. I think he can get a pretty good paycheck from some team who miss out on Lebron and the others, especially if Ray Allen goes back to Boston and Mike Miller and JJ Redick are taken. (Though Korver is better then the last two)

About Gooden, I hope he can stay for one team longer then one season but I guess this means not many minutes for Larry Sanders who I was really looking forward to see playing.. The Bucks are sure going all out this summer, I just hope Salmons stays and Redd gets healthy.

Salmons makes some sense; Gooden, not as much.

Rudy Gay, Grizzlies Agree to $81.6M Extension

http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archi ... extension/
"Rudy Gay and the Grizzlies have agreed to an $81.6 million contract over five years, his agents have confirmed.

Gay is a restricted free agent and was expected to be an option for teams that were unable to reach a deal with players such as LeBron James and Joe Johnson."

Today's been a pretty disappointing start to free agency so far. Make that Rudy Gay and Joe Johnson who are cashing in for a lot more than they deserve. My first question was, why would the article even care to list Lebron James and Joe Johnson in the second sentence as most coveted free agents--and not Wade or Bosh?

What's Joe planning to do, retire as a Hawk? If the Hawks are to sign someone like him for 6 years at $124M, he'd better put up Kobe Bryant-like numbers.

That deal is just absolutely terrible, I wouldn't even trade Brand with his fat contract for him anymore. They paid about $8M annually more than he should deserve.

I tthink John Hammond knows what he's doing. he already added an all-star SF to the squad, and now he's adding a solid defensive big man to a large, but not quite Albatross deal. I'd say he's an improvement over Moute at least. (He averaged almost 15 and 10 last year, albeit on a bad team). All their starting lineup is missing is a three-point shooter (making John Salmons a good fit). Ridnour's probably gone, but I like their bench as well.

Gotta love Darko getting yet another contract.

That's why I'm pretty pleased with the news. If the Hawks are set to overpay Johnson, the Bulls can't. Great news for Chicago, facepalming move for Atlanta.

I personally think the Gooden signing will put Milwaukee over the top of the barrel.

Frye is getting 30M over 5 years from the Suns and Mike Miller got the same offer from the Lakers. Damn, I hope Korver gets that sort of deal.

I don't mind the Bucks signing Gooden, he helps. I do mind the amount they are paying though. But if he can provide close to double-double per game then is worth it. Then again I would've preferred them to somehow get Patrick Patterson in draft & starting him, but Gooden helps.

I don't like the sort of money they are throwing at John Salmons. I was happy with the Maggette & CDR deals as it meant that Salmons was out the door. Guess I was wrong :( I think he's a pretty solid player, just not at that money & length of deal. I prefer what Delfino brings to table anyways.

---------

Not surprised that the Grizzlies gave maximum to Gay. They know nobody wants to play in Memphis, he's just not worth that sort of dollars.

As for Amir Johnson deal, oh boy  Makes Bogut's deal look good, makes Rondo's deal look great. Bring on the lockout so the owners can be saved from themselves. Why am I not surprised that this is happening? Thanks a lot Lebron (N)

Frye isn't worth $6 mill per year. Mike Miller is. Korver, whom I'm a fan of, probably isn't but given Frye can get that, maybe he is.

Perhaps, but nothing beats chaos. Frankly, most of the threads about Gooden signing would've had one or two posts in it. I expect all the big names to get their own threads as those are worthy of discussion.
