Queensland Inspired By Demolition Man, Plans Swearing Fines

Tue Jun 22, 2010 10:59 am

SWEARING in public could become a major money spinner for the Queensland Government with $100 fines to be issued for the offence along with $300 for public urination and other disorderly offences.

A 12-month trial of ticketing for public nuisance offences has found issuing a fine was more cost-effective and freed up both the courts and police.

Legislation will be introduced into State Parliament later this year and the new ticketing regime will be rolled out from next year.

The trial was prompted by a Crime and Misconduct Commission report which found 60 per cent of summary offences being dealt with in magistrates courts statewide were offences of public nuisance and 97 per cent of defendants either pleaded guilty or were found guilty after they failed to appear in court.

The Courier Mail reports experts fear swearing in public will be a major money spinner and could become the weapon of choice for frustrated officers on the beat.
...
Males accounted for 89 per cent of all tickets issued but the rate of ticketed females was five times higher in Townsville than South Brisbane.

When do the Fast Food Wars begin?

And how do you use those three shells?

Fines for public urination? No question. But a $100 fine for swearing? Do we really have to legislate common decency and social faux pas? Of all the issues in Australian society, is this the most pressing and troubling? I say emphatically, fuck no.

Although, it is entertaining that this is taking place in the home state of our prime minister, who has proven himself to be extremely foul-mouthed.

What is this World coming to when I can't take a piss on the street and yell abuse at people for looking at me while I do it.

That's a fair point, if you're caught urinating in public you might as well shout out some profanities. In for a penny, in for a pound.

I don't pay any sort of attention to Australian public/political policy outside the occasional things I see here, but the government seems like a teenager making rules up as he goes, trying to either:

A. Piss everyone off
or
B. Slowly make Australia into a gigantic cluster fuck

Uriniting in public can get you on the sex offender list in the US, but that's a sketchy situation because unless you're pissing on a telephone pole in the middle of a city, you're probably golden no pun intended lol.

Bit of both, along with seemingly trying to maximise revenue from fines.

If they're going to try out an idea might as well borrow it from one of the greatest action documentary of all time.

As long as they still sell rat burgers in the underground, I have no problem with any of it.

Seemingly? Dunno what's going on where you are, but here they're running articles every two weeks about the new revenue-raising laws/speed cameras/whatever. Without one mention of anything about it also saving lives, because that's not important. Unless the only people getting hurt are the people indulging in the harmful behaviour.

There was an incident a few years ago where a guy with nothing better to do stood on the sidewalk with a "RADAR AHEAD" sign, and, despite achieving the desired drop in speed, was told to fuck off lest he limit the fines that could be obtained.

So yeah, not so much "seemingly" as "blatantly".

I definitely agree that it's painfully apparent when it comes to speed cameras, it's not uncommon to see them stationed just at the end of freeways and thoroughfares where the limit goes from 80 or 90 back to 60.

I am sure our premier has better things on her agenda. However, at least this puts us on the map and everyone knows Queensland for something. :)
