http://www.khou.com/news/Candy-Gets-Thi ... 33319.htmlA third-grader at Brazos Elementary was given a week’s detention for possessing a Jolly Rancher.
...
Leighann Adair, 10, was eating lunch Monday when a teacher confiscated the candy. Her parents said she was in tears when she arrived home later that afternoon and handed them the detention notice.
According to the disciplinary referral, she would be separated from other students during lunch and recess through Friday.
...
Brazos Elementary Principal Jeanne Young, said the problem, in this instance, was that the candy was provided by another student – not the girl’s parents.
No word on if the sugar pusher was expelled to further protect the school from that criminal scum's vicious candy. Would be weird if only the victim of this crime was punished and not the one who brought the stuff into the school threatening all their classmates lives.

That's about seventeen shades of ridiculous. There's looking out for everyone's safety and ensuring their wellbeing, and then there's this.

I don't know the details of this story that much, but principal siding with a teacher like this doesn't sound justifiable. Even a simple apology would have been a nice gesture(even though it'd be admitting the mistake). If she was my kid, I'd look for a good lawyer and try to draw as much media's attention as possible.

Another frivolous lawsuit isn't going to help matters, but if I were in their position I'd definitely be making my voice heard about the stupidity of the situation, in all avenues available to me.

perhaps she was going to suck the candy into a sharp edge and take the school hostage with the newly fashioned weapon?

Good point, they'd have been powerless to contain that kind of threat. Best nip it in the bud.

You would think the candy dealer would get the detention, not the kid who got the candy. I remember one time when I was in like 7th grade someone was giving out pieces of gum during class and the teacher caught them asked if they had enough for everyone else. They didn't and the kid must have gotten really nervous or embarrassed because he broke down crying in the middle of class.
Now that I think about it, that kid never finished high school at my school either
