2011-12 Recap Part 6 – 2012 Playoffs: Conference Finals

Kings Advance To Meet Hawks In NBA Final

After coming back from an upset defeat to the Detroit Pistons last year, the Cleveland Cavaliers looked like they were in perfect shape to roll towards the NBA crown. However, not only did the Atlanta Hawks stand in the way but so did bad luck. LeBron James’ broken toe kept him out for the entire Eastern Conference Final and the Cavs were swept aside by the Hawks. The big story of the round however, came in the Western Conference where the Seattle Stealth and Sacramento Kings waged an epic seven battle.

Whoever said home court advantage means a lot in the playoffs was proven a genius in this seven game series. Despite the fact that none of the games were even close, the Kings and Stealth entertained fans with a fiery and high scoring playoff series. The 2012 Western Conference Finals was a reunion of former College rivals Moses Chara and Reshawn Tyson. Tyson opened the series with superb 38 point outing in Sacramento but it was Chara who had 18 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assists and led his side to a 121-106 win. Chara led 5 other Kings in double figures; with mid-season acquisition Andres Nocioni top scoring with 22.

The Kings then took a 2-0 lead after a 114-103 win at home in Game 2. Chara was again sublime as he notched 37 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. The always-colorful Chara commented after the game that he was the real NBA regular season MVP. Tyson was a non-factor in this one and it was teammate Kevin Durant who led the side with 20 points.

Game 3 in Seattle was a forgettable one for Sacramento as the home side stormed home with a 145-102 abolition of the West’s second seed. Durant was dominant and crashed the Chara-Tyson party with a monster 44 point, 7 rebound effort. Tyson wasn’t bad himself with 27 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and Jason Kidd was vintage with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Kevin Martin led the Kings with 28 points while Chara added 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists.

Seattle won a crucial Game 4 107-89. Tyson and Durant shared the load in this one with Tyson getting 23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and Durant scoring 22. Andrew Bogut finally awoke from his slumber and had a double double of 18 points, 15 rebounds. Kevin Martin once again led the team in scoring with 28 but it was Chara who was the team’s Achilles heel as he was held to 3-11 shooting and 8 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists.

Game 5 went to the home team as the Kings slowly pulled away from a rallying Stealth side. Tyson scored 27 but Chara was always a cut better than he was as he had a near triple double with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 11 assists, and 3 steals. Kevin Martin was ample support for Chara as he finished with 25 points and 7 rebounds. Durant scored 21 and Bogut had 19 points, 13 rebounds for the Stealth. Seattle came out fighting for their lives in Game 6 and that vulnerability and desperateness paid off with a 115-86 win to force a seventh game. Martin’s 27 points and Chara’s 21 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals were not enough to bring the Kings into the Final. Durant scored 24, Aaron Karl was crucial having 20 from off the bench, and Kidd was inspirational with 15 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals.

Game 7, like the series, was disappointing. A 117-109 win for the Kings but one without much of a fight from the away side. Seattle was looking like upsetting Sacramento until Reshawn Tyson’s brain-snap and ejection. Following Tyson’s exit, the Kings cruised to victory and the result never seemed to be in question. Durant had 27 points, Tyson added 23, while Rasheed Wallace may have played his last NBA game and had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Michael Redd led the Kings with 22 points from off the bench. Kevin Martin scored 20 while former Seattle PG Russell Westbrook had his best game of the series with 19 points and 6 assists. Moses Chara capped off another brilliant playoff series with a poor shooting night but was still able to help his team elsewhere. Despite shooting 3-11 and scoring 13 points, Chara still added 9 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals.

Chara, who was involved in a brief altercation with Durant, said after the game that the Kings would win the NBA Finals against the Atlanta Hawks. He rated the Kings as the deepest team in the NBA and the Hawks as one of the most overrated teams.

2011-12 Recap Part 6 – 2012 Playoffs: NBA Finals

Ginolbili, Prince Lead Hawks To NBA Championship

The invaluable experience of NBA champions Manu Ginobili and Tayshaun Prince trumped the offensive firepower of the Sacramento Kings and the Atlanta Hawks went on to win their franchise’s second ever NBA title. This series went the distance after the Kings forced a seventh and deciding game. However, the series was criticized for being boring and lackluster; as evidenced by 6 of the 7 games being blowout wins.

Moses Chara might have hurt a few of the Hawks’ feelings after he called them overrated. He got a taste of how good Atlanta was in an embarrassing Game 1 drubbing. A 109-66 lopsided score line was the result of the Kings coming off a draining 7 game series against the Seattle Stealth and the fact that the Hawks were well rested after their series sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Chara jab would have been a big factor too though. “We don’t care if he thinks we aren’t good. We just want him to have some respect and keep those comments to himself,” Manu Ginobili said after Game 1.

Ginobili led six other Hawks in double figures as they toyed with their NBA Finals opponents. Manu finished with 21 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds. Chara was shut down by Tayshaun Prince and Josh Smith. He was ‘held’ to 14 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals on 6-16 shooting. Kevin Martin led the Kings with 19 points but also struggled to get open as he shot 8-19 from the field. Game 2 was better for the Kings but the result was the same. Sacramento stayed in the game but Atlanta pulled away in the final quarter to take a 2-0 lead with a 107-97 win. Chara made up for his Game 1 gaffe with 22 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. Josh Smith was all over the court with 25 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks and Ginobili was solid down the stretch. He tallied 18 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists for the game.

The Kings played better at home and came away with back to back wins to tie the series. Chara was dominant in a 116-93 Game 3 win as he finished with 32 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals, 1 block and Michael Redd was important by chipping in 21 from off the bench. Chara was less assertive in Game 4 with 16 points and 8 assists but mid-season acquisition Andres Nocioni stepped up with 24 points. Kevin Martin scored 21 and the Kings came away with a 102-95 win. Ginobili was also a little off as he struggled to get his 8 points on 3-14 shooting. Marcus Banks led the Hawks with 19 points.

A heartbreaking 2 point loss at home could have been the turning point of the series. With so much momentum going the Kings’ way and leading throughout the entire fifth game of the series, NBA veteran Tayshaun Prince was able to make the game winning layup and give the Hawks a 3-2 series edge leading into Game 6 as well as break the hearts of every single Kings fan in Arco Arena. Prince finished with25 points, Ginobili led the Hawks with 33, and Smith had 20 points, 16 rebounds. Chara was fuming as his teammates fumbled a pass to him in the possession leading to Prince’s heroics. Chara finished with 30 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists in the 112-110 loss.

The Kings came out strong to tie the series at 3 games apiece with a 104-82 win in Game 6. Redd scored 22 points from off the bench, Nocioni had 21, and Chara notched another postseason triple double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists, 3 steals. Ginobili was shut down as he shot 4-15 from the field and finished with a meager 10 points.

All of the Kings’ effort was in vain as they failed to play with the same intensity in the deciding fixture between the two sides. Game 7 was a 102-89 win for the Hawks as they cruised in the second half. The Hawks’ defense was zoned in on Chara and he finished with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals on 5-16 shooting. Nocioni added 20, Russell Westbrook scored 17 but Kevin Martin and Michael Redd were huge non-factors. The Hawks were led by Ginobili’s 21 points and Smith’s and Prince’s 19 point efforts.

The Hawks won the championship through their defensive efforts on the Kings’ main scoring threats as well as with their entire team stepping up to the plate. Josh Smith was his brilliant all-around self, Ginobili was the leader and scorer down the stretch of big games, Al Horford kept getting the boards, and Marcus Banks always made sure he hit the big shots when no one else could. Tayshaun Prince played his best stretch of games as a Hawk ever (17, 12, 14, 16, 25, 13, 19 for the seven Finals games) and the Hawks bench provided solid backup when the starters needed a rest.

Prince and Ginobili are proven winners. It's really not that unrealistic considering you have a frontcourt of Horford and Smith. Chara's time is still to come.

I'm agreeing with Hova. I thought the Kings were more talented but when you look at it, it was very balanced. You got Josh Smith who is crazy (around maximum 20 ppg, 10 rpg, 4 apg, 2 bpg, 2 spg), with Al Horford at C giving you double digit rebounds and occasional double digit scoring, Manu Ginobili averages 24 ppg, 5 rpg, 5 apg (all u haters out there), Prince who stepped up big time in scoring, and Marcus Banks who was shooting .500 from behind arc I believe... incredible. Their bench wasn't great but the starters really lifted them.

As for Kings, you have washed up Shaq at C (I think he struggled to average 10 ppg, 8 rpg), Moses Chara some reason playing PF because there are no PFs on the Kings atm... Nocioni was a good deal for them and he averaged double digits, Kevin Martin chipping in about 24-25 ppg, Westbrook averaging about 10 ppg, 6 apg, Michael Redd off bench with about 15 ppg... and against the bench not a huge factor but some depth there.

Kings more attacking and Hawks more defensive. Good to see the more defensive team win.
