Man who fought to keep exotic pets killed by his tiger

Postby Andrew on Wed Jan 13, 2010 7:29 pm

Exactly what it says on the tin.

After winning a lengthy legal battle for the right to keep exotic pets, the Canadian owner of a tiger has been mauled to death by the 300kg cat.
Norman Buwalda, 66, was found dead in the tiger's pen on his property in rural Ontario on Sunday afternoon, local time.

"He had gone in to feed the tiger and possibly had been attacked," Ontario Provincial Police Constable Troy Carlson said, indicating there were no witnesses.

"A family member found him dead in the tiger's cage. We don't know what may have provoked or caused the attack."

Unfortunate and all but considering the legal battle to keep exotic pets was the result of a ban handed down after a 10 year old boy was attacked by a tiger while visiting the property in 2004, perhaps the council had a point.

When will these circus-people realize that these animals are going to wake up one day and snap back to being a wild animal instead of some house pet.

Reminds me of a pet chimp attack that happened around here recently. They said the same thing, "It went crazy"

That scene includes one of my favourite post-classic era Moe lines.

Just to add something from one of my city's newspapers:

The Toronto Star wrote:No charges were pressed at the time, but Buwalda, who was the president of the Canadian Exotic Animal Owner's Association, fought the bylaw with the help his lawyer, Alan Patton.

Oh the irony.

These people should realise though that a wild animal will always be a wild animal no matter how you tame it. Their wild instinct will never be gone.

Not necessarily true..some animals domesticate easily. Tigers are not one of them...Had a friend with a pet raccoon though. Thing was as tame as could be. It never attacked anyone in 10 years it lived.

Well, my mistake. When I said wild animals I was referring to tigers, lions and the like. Not animals like raccoons or rabbits. ;)

One of my favorite Simpsons episode, or moment to be exact. Opened my eyes to the joy of a monkey knife fight.

Call me biased, prejudiced, or close-minded but if a person tells me that he/she is a member of PETA I already assume that person has less brain capacity than that of a chimp (or pigs for that matter), unless they prove it otherwise.

I also assume a certain level of self-righteousness, unwillingness to see reason and maladjusted priorities, so you're not the only one with that prejudice.

Definitely right on the first one. They feel like they're the great defender in that Cracked feature.

The Great Defender sees himself or herself as a moral crusader, like a cross between Batman and Jesus.

Spot on; great article which I either missed or at least don't remember reading when it was first posted.

That, or they may chime in with the much more annoying, "There are millions of starving children in the world, and you guys are getting worked up over some puppies?"

Reverse that, and you've pretty much summed up the PETA sentiment in my view.
