Spyware/Anti Virus Software - Which do you use?

Postby NovU on Sun Jan 10, 2010 7:40 am

Now days, I'm experiencing slow windows loading time plus slow transfer rate when downloading. I'm not sure if it's due to spywares or virus, but I decided to get one. As for anti virus software, I have been using freeware called Avast. It seems to work great, and I don't have any problems with it, but what I need is a software that can kill spywares. I'd prefer it to be free software just like Avast, but if it works really good, I wouldn't mind paying for what it's worth. Let me know what you guys use with short reviews.

Anti-Virus Software: Avast, Norton 360, AVG 9.0

Spyware: Malwarebytes, superantispyware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster

Malwarebytes. The free version is all you need to get you sorted.

I use a mac, but for my windows partition, I use Norton 360. It's a good program and I haven't had any problems at all. I seem to pick up a fair few tracking cookies however.

Ah yes, as far as anti-virus software is concerned I'm also in favour of AVG 9.0 Free.

I update Spybot and Spyware Blaster because I like watching progress bars, but I never scan with Spybot or anything else.

Stopped doing it after a decade of not finding anything. Never even bothered to install an anti-virus on this PC.

PeerBlock is the only active protection I use at all.

Same, I use AVG (free version) and Malwarebytes. I've tried all different anti-virus software packages and these two do an awesome job for me

Ok, I updated the list above.

I just tried that and it found 19 stuff from my computer. For now, I am thinking I will stick with it as it seems it works to my satisfaction.

Also I will give a try to AVG 9.0. though I'm happy with Avast. I will tell you guys what I find different later after I try them.

I'm just curious would AVG 9.0 can handle viruses for an internet cafe because I currently work as a technician in one but I only installed a deep freeze cause I don't have a license anti-virus to install

AVG (free) is sufficient for me. Those who complain that AVG doesn't detect or clean/isolate properly just don't know how to customize its options.

The new version of AVG has an option to autoscan flash drives once inserted. It may slow down the system a bit until the scanning is over which may lead to the customers complaining of having a slow internet because they don't know the real reason of the slow down.
Autoscanning of the flash drive isn't even needed if you customise the real time protection of AVG to heal/contain malware once it's activated, even if it's from or not of the flash drive.
I can't stress enough regularly updating the definitions of AVG. You can set AVG to have a scheduled update and even whether to restart the PC or not if the update requires it.

What's more annoying are the customers who slam the mouse as if that will make the PC faster or remove what they call the 'lag' .

Those who complain that AVG doesn't detect or clean/isolate properly just don't know how to customize its options.

Unfortunately it's true though. I spend a lot of time fixing friends' and relatives' computers and there are tons of malware and adware that AVG will never pick up on. Even on my own PC, AVG never detected a crazy ass adware that forced me to format my drive a few weeks ago. Hence the importance of having at least one of the programs mentioned above (Malwarebytes is typically the best and the most frequently updated).

Used in conjunction with Malwarebytes, I'd say so. Can't beat the price either.

Speaking of which, I think I just got some sort of malware... :?
I downloaded a patch from the 2K section, it was on my desktop, and I noticed that the icons would not disappear anymore when deleting the file, they stay on the desktop until I right click the desktop and hit "refresh". Then, Malwarebytes would not close properly after that, so I'm afraid I may have caught some shit once again. AVG and Malwarebytes did not detect anything so far...
