Billups To Miss Two Games

Image
October 30th 2010

Nets point guard Chauncey Billups will miss the team's next
two games to rest his bruised knee.

Billups bumped knees with Knicks center Darko Milicic and
was helped off the court in the Nets season opener against
the Knicks on Oct. 29; He returned to play in the second half
but appeared to be affected by the knee. X-Rays were negative
and additional MRI scans shows nothing more then a bruise
on the knee.

The Nets guard is scheduled to return on Nov. 3 in the Nets
home game against the LA Lakers.

Dirk Dominates as Mavs defeat Warriors in season opener
Image

Dallas, TX - Estonian rookie Martti Must may have had his moment of triumph with a trey right in Dirk's face, but it was the former NBA MVP who had the last laugh.

Behind Nowitzki's dominating 35 point, 6 rebound, 4 assist, 3 steal, 3 block performance, the Dallas Mavericks left the American Airlines Center with a 94-86 victory over the gritty Golden State Warriors, who fought with the Mavs till the very last second possible.

"They showed a lot of character" said Nowitzki "Gave us a heck of a battle, fortunately, we were able to keep playing our game and sustain the lead"

Aside from a 15-27 second quarter, the Warriors were playing on the same level as the Mavericks, fighting for every ball and every possession. However, the Mavs stood firm and gave Golden State no chance to close the gap.

"We executed pretty well and played some good defense" said Jason Kidd, who had 18 points and a game high 14 assists in the victory "We kept our game and played it out"

Jason Terry added in 16 points, while offseason addition Marcus Camby grabbed 12 boards and had 3 blocks.

The Warriors were led by Andris Biedrins, who had 15 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. 5 players were in double digits for Golden State, led by former captain Stephen Jackson's 17 points. Rookie Martti Must had a pretty good start to his career with 14 points, 3 rebounds and a block in 18 minutes off the bench, shooting 6 for 13 from the field; while Monta Ellis and Shawn Marion added in 13 and 12 points respectively.

"It was ok, just too bad we couldn't get the win" said Must when asked about his NBA debut "I had butterflies coming into the game, but after 2 or 3 possessions i got comfortable and did my thing"

The 'thing' would include some sweet shooting, including a three in Dirk's face, as well as some solid boxing out and help defense. They don't show up on the stat sheet, but he certainly made an impact in the game.

"The kid's got talent, definitely" said Warriors coach Don Nelson "He reminds me a lot of Dirk the way he plays, i love it"

In comparison, starting power forward Brandan Wright only had 6 points and 5 rebounds in 21 minutes of play.

Despite this however, Coach Nelson did not gave any indications of whether Must would be replacing Wright in the starting lineups any time soon. Although, if he keeps up this level of play, the change will be inevitable.

Notes: Mavericks Matt Carroll recorded a trillion....Warriors' Must is the second player from Estonia to play in the NBA....

14 points in 18 minutes. Damn, this should tell Nellie to start me over Wright. The Warriors have some nice pieces with Marion, Lawson, Farmer to go with their old cast.

Sit, c'mon, off the bench with 14 points and 3 rebounds in 18 minutes against one of the best teams there are. Off the charts for the 12th pick.

Don't stay on the bench. Or else I won't be able to drip 70 on you. :|

Yeah, Dirk was shooting the lights out all game long. It started after Martti's 3 in his face...after that DIrk just took over, and he blocked Martti too, amongst other rejections

They are ok, but Farmer played like crap as the starting pg in this game

Howard, Magic crush Sixers in opener
Image

Philadelphia, PA - It didn't take long for the Philly crowd to file into the arena on this season opener.

It didn't take long before they all left, either.

The defending back to back Eastern Conference Champions easily manhandled the Sixers in the season opener with a 108-75 victory; with Dwight Howard leading the charge, the Magic played tough defense on the Sixers all night long and pounded the ball inside. Howard had 22 points and 15 rebounds, Jameer Nelson scored 20 points alongside 8 dishes, Carter chipped in 19 points and Rashard Lewis added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Magic.

"Coach told us that if we played hard early, we'll get a good rest afterwards" said Howard "It's a good thing we listened to him"

All five of Orlando's starters sat out the fourth quarter.

The Magic bench scored 18 points, all in the fourth, and that was just what they need to hold on for the blowout victory.

For Philly, Louis Williams led the way with 17 points and 7 assists, he was helped by Linas Klezia's 16 points but the Sixers star Andre Iguodala did not have a good game, he only managed 11 points and 6 assists in 30 minutes, and barely shot the ball (9 attempts) while Elton Brand was even worse offensively, as he only had 7 points. He did, however, managed 7 rebounds and 5 assists but shot 3 for 10 for the game.

One positive, on the otherhand, was the surprise play of 8th overall pick Carl Cruz. Originally thought of as more of a project in a talent depleted draft (aside from the top 5), the Philippines native did a bit of everything in his limited 9 minutes off the bench. With 6 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and a steal, Cruz may be more valuable then the Sixers originally thought.

"I see a lot of potential for this kid" said head coach Maurice Cheeks "I think he'll continue to improve and could really help us out as the season progresses"

But no matter how good he might become, Philly's problems are far from over. Going by the results of this game, the Sixers are in for a long season, and most likely could only wait and endure, as the next draft lottery approaches.
