Seattle Inches Closer To Second Round

Preview | Box Score | Recap

Kevin Durant confronts the referee after being called for a foul

23 Apr, 2011

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Stealth are one game away from advancing to the second round of the 2011 NBA playoffs after an emotional Game 4 victory against the Los Angeles Clippers. The fifth seeded Stealth nearly fell apart on their home floor in the final quarter after Kevin Durant got into a fiery affair with the Clippers’ Amare Stoudemire and the game’s officiating crew.

Midway through the final quarter, Durant appeared to have blocked Stoudemire. However, a foul was called on the fourth year forward and Durant immediately confronted the game official. Andrew Bogut rushed over to pull Durant away as Durant pointed his index finger at the official’s face. After saying a few words, the ref called a technical foul on Durant before Bogut successfully coerced him to turn around. In between Stoudemire’s free throw attempts, Durant walked up to Stoudemire at the free throw line and said something to the forward. Durant backed down only due to the ref’s warning that he would be ejected if he delayed the game any further.

The match got ugly after that as Durant and Stoudemire matched up against each other; neither of them looking like they were going for the ball most of the time and were more inclined to try and land a hit each another in the head. This coincided with the Stealth allowing the Clippers to go on a 7-0 run and take a late lead in the game. Stoudemire’s dunk on Durant, with 2:52 left, put LA up 122-117.

After a timeout, the Stealth players regained their focus and never looked back. The Stealth went on a game ending 10-0 run to take the fourth game of the series and move into a 3-1 series lead. Bogut rattled off 6 points down the stretch including one possession in which he was fouled on a made shot then converted the free throw. Jason Kidd, who had five triples for the night, hit a three pointer with 43 seconds to put Seattle ahead 125-122. As the final buzzer sounded, the Seattle players celebrated as if they had won the series while the Clippers quickly retreated from the court.

Stoudemire finished with 24 points for the visiting Clippers looked disappointed but denied that the series was over, “It’s far from over. We need to go back home and win the next game so that we can give ourselves a shot at winning Games 6 and 7. But it’s too soon to look so far ahead, we need to take one game at a time.”

When questioned about Durant, Stoudemire commented, “I can’t believe he wasn’t thrown out for being the fool that he is. Since when are you allowed to come up to talk trash with someone in between free throws?”

Durant responded to Stoudemire’s comments, “Me talking trash to him is like my team mates coming up to give me a high five. Maybe he’s scared of me. He doesn’t think he can beat me without being protected by the referees. Speaking of them, they were terrible tonight. Amare Stoudemire can’t beat me in a real game of basketball. I’m done talking about him.” A few minutes later, Durant couldn’t help but mention his rival again, “Someone tell Stoudemire that Seattle is my team baby.”

Durant finished with 21 points for Seattle who were led by Bogut’s 27 points and 8 assists. Kidd had a double double of 21 points and 10 assists whilst super sub Rasheed Wallace kept the home team in the game with 21 from off the bench.

The Clippers’ second unit was just as big as Wallace as Mehmet Okur had his first big game of the series with 20 points and Ricky Davis continued his scintillating form with 20 points and 6 assists. Game One hero Eric Gordon score 19.

The series now returns to the STAPLES Centre where the Clippers will need to win Game 5 to avoid elimination. After the game, Stealth Head Coach George Karl told his players not to get too cocky leading up to the elimination game. He reminded everyone about the Lakers taking them to a seventh game in the first round last season after being in the same position.

“We were one win away from the second round and the Lakers won two games to tie it and take us to a game 7,” Karl told reporters, “We can’t let it happen again this year. If we are serious about going deep into the playoffs, we really need fresh legs in the later rounds.”

Karl reiterated, “There is absolutely no room for complacency!”

Notes: This game was Kidd’s first 20+ point game of the current postseason; a sign that he is fit again after a recent injury… Durant struggled in the fourth quarter as he could not get a shot off against the Clippers defense but was lucky that Bogut scored 14 of his 27 in the final quarter… During last year’s playoffs, the Stealth took a 3-1 lead against the LA Lakers but lost Game 5 in LA and then Game 6 at home. The Stealth did win Game 7 but are hoping to finish this series early…

Monster game from Bogut. You really needed his spark with KD not that fired. Now you gotta finish them next game.

Fantastic win. Despite Ricky Davis maintaining his 20 PPG average, this series looks like a wash. Don't let them back in like you did with the Lakers last year. ;)

Also, its odd to see Bugut with 8 assists. Career high?

Bogut is a good passer for a C. He has had 8 before, so it's a tie-personal-best.

Great win and I see you flying through this series.

Career playoff high. Playoff numbers dont count for career regular season highs... i found out cause rip hamilton has a career high and it doesnt change in his profile...

Same man, was worried a handful of series would be sweeps but good to see some of the lower seeds putting up good fights/series.

No 7 Lakers, No 6 Warriors, No 6 Pistons all doing well.

ouch! i was terrible against portland! oh wait steve nash? ok i will take that 8 point game! lol!

Following the elimination of the wolves Manfred Nissley had this to say. "While I am disappointed in the early bow out I must say I enjoyed playing Steve Nash. He is a class act and I learned a lot from this series and appreciate his skill set. I believe that next year the Timberwolves and I will advance further into playoffs. I wouldn't mind meeting Jason Kidd in conference finals next year."

Home team score second, away team first. Thats why winning teams look like they score less.
