NLSC Pop-up Hell

Postby Lamrock on Sat Nov 07, 2009 2:54 pm

Today i have noticed that a good percentage of the times I open a page on the forums now, I get a pop-up. (Usually things like Acai Berry diets and "Is Working At Home The Next Gold Rush?!") I checked to see it is wasn't just a virus, but I don't get pop-up on any of the other sites I go to. I didn't have a problem when you added the banner ads, but this is getting pretty annoying. Anybody else with this problem?

EDIT: As soon as I post this I stop getting them. Odd.

The pop-up should only show up once every 24 hours. If it keeps popping up more often, let me know.

I've never had a pop-up or any sort of weird ad that gets in the way like the one Ben posted here. I'm using Firefox with Adblock. The only really irritating one I've come across was a banner ad that wouldn't shut up. The "That's the sound of something awesome..." thing.

Yeah, I know the one you mean. I think that one might be headed out of the rotation, haven't gotten it in a couple of days.

i'm getting a pop up every single time i open a forum, every time. those annoying ones too, the ones that won't let you close it without clicking "ok" to something. i just restart firefox w/ out clicking anything.

the one i've been getting is some fake news article, you close it and then u get a "google home income" u can't close unless you click something.

I'm still only getting one pop-up per 24 hours as intended, but I'll make some inquiries about it.

Yesterday I did have a bit of trouble with automatic redirections to an ad for security software every time I visited a page here or on the main site but that's the first time I've encountered that. It was only happening for around ten minutes and it seems to be OK now, I did report the issue and will keep an eye on it. If these problems persist, please feel free to shoot me an email so that I can investigate the issue ASAP.

Yeah its pretty frequent now, like when I click the main banner to go to the main page of the forum got one of those popups, and even going into different threads or whatever (such as this one) caused a popup. Couldn't go anywhere for several minutes without getting one of those.

I've reported the issue with the automatic forwarding, at the moment we're trying to pin down which ad is causing it.

From the main page:

You may have noticed a few issues with a particular ad on the NLSC (both on the main site and in the Forum) causing an automatic redirection to a website advertising virus scanning software. We have reported the issue to UGO and it is currently being investigated, in the meantime that particular banner has been removed so it should not cause us any more problems. I apologise for the inconvenience.
