Stern sees women in the NBA

Story

NEW YORK, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- NBA Commissioner David Stern tells Sports Illustrated that he sees women playing in the NBA within the next decade.

Stern told SI senior NBA writer Ian Thomsen in an exclusive interview this week that if a woman played in the NBA, she likely would have a combination of multiple skills and aggressiveness.

"It would be an athletic achievement without precedent," Stern said. "I think that's well within the range of probability … I'll leave it to the real experts to talk about the muscle factor."

I have my doubts about it happening. It would probably be little more than a cheap publicity stunt if it ever did.

Where would they play? A guard would have to be the only position where they would actually have an impact on defence, naturally the tall men would just be way too powerful for the women.

He mentioned Diana Taruasi as a possible pioneer for the woman in the NBA. The only thing Tarausi can do in terms of competing with NBA players is getting really drunk and driving.

It will never happen. I will begin watching more college ball and over-seas ball if that happens. Even my wife thinks its a dumb idea.

I will also be watching highlights of all the Women in the NBA getting the shit stomped out of them on a nightly basis. Tarausi vs Artest?

LeBron disagrees
http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wireta ... ar_future/

NBA commissioner David Stern said in a recent interview that he believes a woman could play in the league within the next decade.

However, Cavaliers star LeBron James doesn't agree.

"Ten years?" James said on Friday night. "That's, like, right around the corner. [In] 10 years, I'll be 34. I'll still be in the NBA. I think 10 years is pushing it, honestly."

"I love all sports," James Olympics. They're wonderful in the WNBA. They're great. It's a lot of great players. But 10 years, that's pushing it. I think that's pushing it."
Allen Iverson passing on family values:

A.I.: son, what you doing there?
A.I.'s son: practicing my math for my test tommorow
A.I: practice? practice? we talkin' 'bout practice. not the test - practice. we talkin' 'bout practice. not the test, not the test - practice.

I don't agree with it on the fact that if a guy wanted to play in the WNBA, they wouldn't allow him. So I think NBA should be exclusive to guys since it's the men's competition.

If they want to make a small league of mixed basketball, that would probably be acceptable as long as there is a minimum of two women on the court.

David Stern is well aware of that thus this comment...

Any man would tightly guard an aggressive bitch, I mean woman player.

men and women shouldn't compete DIRECTLY. if the competition is indirect and the woman is a freak of nature there are sports she can compete with against most men and win. im thinking track and field, swimming type events. not organized team sports or ones when a man's strength would be too big an advantage. if you're the fastest chick out there, by all means go for it! but by the same token, i wouldn't want to see a female MMA fighter vs BJ Penn... a female running back getting crushed by Ray Lewis... or a female point guard getting smashed as soon as she got into the paint by Kevin Garnett. direct competition involving contact sports at the highest levels only end 2 ways, with women getting hurt or the men playing too soft and taking it easy on the women, which is an insult to anybody's skills if you take them too soft.... save this sort of thing for pick-up games, charity events. being the best female athlete in your chosen sport is a good thing, stick with that ladies! although, the after-game showers could be interesting... for somebody.

Yeah, I have played with a few girls on the court. I think men naturally relax a bit because of it.

Exactly, it can't be a two way street. It would be one thing to have mixed teams playing in an exhibition, as they've done with the Celebrity Game at the All-Star Weekend, but it just doesn't seem to be a good idea for regular competition.

it's called seperate locker rooms you. Every valid intelligent point you've made was negated by that statement.

If someone's good enough? Let em go for it. If they're that good, they'll be tough enough to take the hits.

Do I think someone is actually good enough? Probably not in the next 10 years. It'd have to be someone probably like the south african runner they did dna testing to check her gender...(turns out she's technically female but gets all the muscle hormones of males...hermaphroditism ftw...gold medals for all!)

I have no doubt that someone like Lisa Leslie, Candace Parker or Lauren Jackson could compete against guys, but women have their own league and so should men. I think that's the issue here. If they were to make a mixed competition, that'd be awesome.

Oznogrd, i like to make valid points, then throw off my credibility by following with the asinine. (spelling? lol) its kinda like "my thing". i'm kinda nutty like that.

if you're the best female at "anything" thats a hell of a thing to be. why wouldn't a woman be satisfied with that? she may be able to compete with men in a contact sport, but at the highest levels theres just no competition.

don't dig too deeply into the meaning of "anything" up there, come to think of it. sickos.

see... i cant help myself.

of all the big league sports, a female making it into MLB makes the most sense, due to the fact that baseball isnt a "contact" sport.

Actually kickers in football. On the rare occasion they get hit its usually not hard and its usually not roughing but "running into" the kicker. Makes alot more sense than baseball where velocity/power is the name of the game which due to muscle mass difference a woman would be at a distinct disadvantage.

But woman can adapt and are more capable in handling a huge stick than men are.
