I failed to recognize 1 from the list, which is Samus Aran. Looks like a regular space marine to me, but the secret should have been somewhat surprising back then. Anyways, I can't argue Mario being the top of list. It has come a long long way.

I'm surprised to see Leisure Suit Larry ranked higher than Link, amongst others. I'm a fan of the former's games and own the entire original collection but in terms of widespread popularity and making more of an impact with gamers, I wouldn't necessarily rank him that high.

I was actually surprised about Leisure Suit Larry as well, but yesterday ironically, my professor at university mentioned about Leisure Suit Larry during the class of System Hardware and he's about 55 years old. I guess in his days, the game was a big hit, but some of us are too young to recgonize it as that big of a success in the gaming industry.

Oh it was successful and significant to gaming in its own right, but as I said in terms of widespread popularity and impact, I would think that a character like Link would rank higher on a list like this.

Cant argue with the number one...and how do you spend time on the internet and not know samus? Go to some flash sites (newgrounds) and you'll see why...her following is huge...although occasionally sickening. But im surprised at 2-5 ranks. i just dont consider any of them that big a deal.
No Sonic?
No Gordon Freeman?
No Earthworm Jims/boogermans/toejam & Earls?
No Bomberman?
I could go on but ill stop. This list is full of fail as others said.

I'd definitely put Ryu from Street Fighter up there as well. The hadouken I'd say is parodied and used in pop culture enough times to warrant a place up there.
