Fall of the Berlin Wall, 20 Years On

Any thoughts or memories? I can't claim that it affected me greatly, what with being five years old at the time and on the other side of the world, but it's one of the earliest memories I have of a big world event happening during my lifetime. I also remember that an episode of the old Alvin and the Chipmunks Saturday morning cartoon that ran in the 80s slipping in some commentary on the situation with an episode about a year before the Wall fell.

Alvin and the Chipmunks were the unsung heroes who made the fall of the wall possible.

As a child I only remember seeing it on tv and thinking to myself that the people were happy because they were destroying something and it's government property! That, made me happy too.

Even tho 50 passed,nazies thinking was still there,in their heads.
I'd say the wall had to be destroyed like 200 years after.
When Germans forget their damn thinking.
And why the Hell,some of us should be happy,for a country that killed so many of us.
Maybe not all the germans are like that,but still some of them are.
This is driving me crazy.

I agree, I don't think that's a fair assessment of the German people as a whole at all. As far as the Berlin Wall being an apt punishment, putting aside the fact it didn't punish the people who were truly responsible for the atrocities orchestrated by the Third Reich and the notion that two wrongs don't make a right, it's more a reflection of the distrust and lack of co-operation between the occupying powers in post-war Germany rather than Hitler's many wrongdoings.

Sad that so few have learned the lessons of the Cold War (or the 1930s, or...) and not just don't care about what went on behind the Iron Curtain, but actively want the rest of us to live in a Stalinist society as long as they get to be those in "The Party."

You do know the wall was only built in half of one German city, in only one part of Germany, and it was built not out of desire to punish the Germans for the actions of the Nazi regime but to keep the East Berliners trapped in the totalitarian part of the city from escaping into the Western part and then from there into freedom, right?

The Nazi's (and their Lithuanian collaborators) did far less to you than the Russians have over the centuries.

Hell, the Soviets alone topped what the Nazi's did in terms of number of causalities.

That's still not a reason to condemn future generations of Germans and Russians to living in a totalitarian state.

I don't know about that considering what's he's advocating. He deserves worse insults probably.

The Soviets deliberately didn't rebuild vast swaths of East Germany as punishment for The Patriotic War for decades after. And then left them in a totalitarian state.

Considering how the Communists have gotten off, I'd say the German PEOPLE were more than punished enough for every atrocity in the world since World War II, especially considering how many we were stupidly put through the show trials at Nuremberg.

Not saying they weren't criminals of the worst kind. But we should have just shot them in the back of the head where we found them instead of mock trying them considering we didn't even bother to use the mounds of evidence the Nazi regime had documented. We were barely better during the War and it would have been more honest and deserving. We shouldn't pretend Nuremberg clears us from letting the Nazi's, Japanese, and Soviets drag us down almost near their levels of being barbarians during the War. I think it's pretty justified, one of the few times in human history. We were literally racing to murder and rape them so they wouldn't get the bomb first.

Most of the Soviets probably deserved even worse if they weren't all fat elderly senile drunks, which is why it collapsed, the new generation couldn't run things. I mean, ignoring the whole Leftism doesn't ever work thing. (As we get to find out in about a decade! Yay!) The old timers falling apart just made it more obvious quicker.

The Soviet Union is the biggest atrocity of the 20th Century. Not the year long, or whatever it was, Nazi occupation of the Baltic states. Meanwhile, The Holocaust is just the latest big government slaughter of a scapegoat minority. Boring, really. Nazi's just figured out how to compress the Soviet's 70 years into one decade. TheDee bitching out the German's for what they did during The War while not instead or at least also writing paragraphs about the near century of horror forced on his country and too many others by the state that built The Wall he seems to love is the real offense.
