All-Movie team

Postby Stevan on Tue Jan 06, 2004 6:01 pm

Mods, if this should be in general, please move it (y)

Okay folks, here's the deal. I'm going to take characters who played basketball players in movies, and make an all Movie-Star team. I'm only using fictional characters, therefore Earl Manigault (from the Movie "Rebound") is ineligable as is Pistol Pete's character in his movie, and so on. I'm using the names of the characters from the movies, so you'll see names like Sydney Dean, and Billy Hoil, etc.

I have listed players by their name, position and in brackets the movie they are from.

Let's start with the best player, and then move onto other talent for our team.

Jesus Shuttlesworth (SG) (He Got Game) - he is an amazing talent in high school. He is Lebron before Lebron. He is gods gift to basketball. An all-round adonis! Everybody wants a piece of him, and he is a very strong minded individual who can handle being the go to guy. He is confident.

Sydney Dean (SG) & Billy Hoil (SF) (White Men Can't Jump) - you can't have one without the other. These guys work extremely well together. Sydney is a trash talking, terrific athlete, do it all kind of player. He has great scoring ability. Billy on the other hand is not a great athlete, but can shoot the ball, is a great passer, and has innate instincts like Larry Bird. Billy played some college ball. These two guys have the toughness of streetballers.

Jimmy Dolan (PG) (In the Air Up There) - Jimmy is college scout, once a stand out college player who would have gone pro had he not blown out his knee! But Jimmy still has game, as he showed when he played the arrogant rookie (Buddy Wilson) he was scouting, one on one, and kicked his butt. Jimmy is not a young guy anymore, but he gives our team experience and leadership. Jimmy is famous for the "Jimmy Dolan shake and bake".

Saleh (C) (In the Air Up There) - Saleh is a raw, but an extreme talent which Jimmy Dolan discovered in Africa. He has a Hakeem Olajuwon feel to him, young, big and slender and a terrific athlete who can block shots and is developing his offensive skills. He plays college ball in the States.

Jake Shuttlesworth (SF-PF) (He Got Game) - Jake is the father of young talent Jesus. Jake isn't young, but like Jimmy Dolan, he has experience. He has fundamentals, can shoot the ball from mid range (see opening Prison scene) and is serving a long prison sentence. This man is most likely hungry.

Quincy McCall (SG) (Love and Basketball) - Quincy is another extremely talented college player who eventually has a shot with the LA Lakers. Injuries hurt his career, but he still has some game and confidence.

Neon Bodeaux (C) (Blue Chips) - Neon is an enourmas talent physically and metaphorically. He's a true centre, a power player, who is plucked from the street to play college ball, and eventually goes onto the NBA. Neon is our dominant big man. He's raw, but any deficiencies in his game can be masked by his awesome power.

Scott Howard (PG) (Teen Wolf) - Scott Howard is a special case, he is a warewolf, and plays his best Basketball when he is morphed into the Wolf! He's an awesome athlete and can do some amazing things with the basketball.

Kenny Tyler (PG-SG) (The 6th Man) - Once part of a one two tandem with brother Antoine, Kenny manages to become the go to guy of his college team once Antoine passes away. Kenny is a descent talent just getting some confidence under his skin.

Tommy 'Shep' Sheppard (SF-PF) (Above the Rim) - Tommy is a slightly older guy who was once talented in his day, but is haunted by the death of his brother. Tommy practices without a ball, but is just as effective with the ball in his hands. A good all-round player, Tommy can play SF, and log some minutes at the PF position if needed.

Note: I haven't seen Basketball Diaries or Finding Forrester, so I don' t know about the talent in those movies.

Anyway, that's our talent, and it shows us that there's a lack of big guys in movies just like there is in real life.

On to our starting 5:

C - Neon Bodeaux
PF - Saleh
SF - Tommy Sheppard
SG - Jesus Shuttlesworth
PG - Jimmy Dolan
-------
6th man - Quincy McCall
Sydney Dean
Billy Hoil
Jake Shuttlesworth
Kenny Tyler
Scott Howard

We have no big men on the bench, but Jake Shuttlesworth could log some minutes at the four, and Saleh can move over to the centre spot when needed. Overall, pretty good team.

Comments, ideas, disagreements, players I've forgotten? Hope you guys enjoyed it and feel free to add anything you like (y)

Also Antwon Tyler from 6th Man was nasty...though he died :( He was still a great ghost.

They also made a kid movie about Lamon Carr, who was a guy who had bad knees after a successful college career and was trying to get a deal with an NBA team, and coach some Jewish kids at the same time.

Not even a mention to Hoosiers...tsk,tsk.

I think the best player in that was a guy named Jimmy. So I would add him to the list.

Saleh is a good trash-talker.... at least in his native tongue. Not sure about his English trash-talking though.

hahaha, Slam Dunk Ernest. That looks so shit, I never bothered to pick it up even though it had Kareem (the best centre of all time) on the cover!

I dunno about Saleh's trash talking, but when he hit that goat with his jumpshot, that has to be one of the classic basketball movie moments :P

As for Air Bud, I dunno about him guys... all he could do was shoot that 8 foot head-butt shot! Really, he was like an Allan Houston with less range and more drool

Kyle from "Above the Rim" is a good suggestion, though he's a gang-banger wannabe, so I dunno how devoted he is to the game. Tupac... er "Birdie" has too much of a hold on him... hehe :)

Thanks for the ideas guys... keep em comming!

How about Stacey Patton(Malik Sealy R.I.P.) from EDDIE. Also, that European center who was weird and took the charge from Larry Johnson. John Salley the veteran in the movie, was nasty.
