Top 10 "Meltdowns" 2000-2009

Postby Andrew on Tue Sep 22, 2009 11:42 pm

Basically covering any event where there is a perceived lack of thought, reason or rationale. Link

1. Palace Brawl
2. Chris Mills challenges several Blazers players to a fight
3. Darko Milicic's rant
4. Shaq vs Brad Miller
5. Ha Seung Jin vs Nedzad Sinanovic
6. Marcus Camby punches Danny Ferry, clashes heads with Jeff Van Gundy
7. Rasheed Wallace throws a towel at Arvydas Sabonis
8. Allen Iverson's now infamous "practice?" rant
9. Nuggets/Knicks scuffle from a couple of years ago
10. Steve Nash given the MVP award two years running

No surprises with #1. Truth be told, I'd forgotten about a few of those incidents.

I dont personally agree with number 10. I think Nash receiving MVP for two straight season was well deserving.

But he wasn't necessarily the most deserving candidate the second time around, even though his numbers were better and the Suns were without Amar'e, which kind of accounts for the former. It is quite different from the other entries on the list though and I guess that's why it's just in there at number ten.

I don't think he deserved it the first time round, but the second time around without Amare & JJ gone, I thought it was deserved. Luvin' the Jail Blazer moments :P

Kelly Dwyer is a creative fellow isn't he? If he makes another 'top 10' article, I consider him a retard.

After thinking about it, I think Chris Mills should be higher. Especially since Dwyer didn't mention Stephen Jackson in the Palace Brawl entry. Artest's actions make sense if you consider the guy tried to get a job at Circuit City because he wasn't playing enough for the Bulls. Jermaine O'Neal's actions shouldn't have got him a major suspension. Stephen Jackson is the crazy one there as he ran into the stands just looking for someone, anyone to fight.

Chris Mills on the other hand blocks the Blazers team bus, threatens to fight and even murder some of them, then tries to follow the bus to their airport. All because Bonzi Wells was "rough" in the game that night.

Good point. The Palace Brawl has gotten the nod because of the number of players not exercising good judgment, the fact tha the game had to be called (even if there was less than a minute left) and all the attention it got, not to mention the fallout that has affected future rulings. But tempers flared in the heat of the moment and the situation escalated when fans decided to get involved. Chris Mills' actions were a bit more worrying.

I can accept the Palace Brawl as number one because of how important it is to league history. But it wasn't a meltdown as much as Chris Mills was when you stop and think about what happened and who was involved.

Chris Mills had zero excuses. We knew Artest was insane already we were all waiting for it. Throw in Stephen Jackson, and the animosity between the teams.

I'm kinda shocked it took that long for a serious fight in the NBA. I mean, in the 1950s when fans weren't assaulting the players it was a weird game.

7. Rasheed Wallace(notes) throws a towel at Arvydas Sabonis

The last line of the Iverson description fits with this one.

With not much happening in the offseason and the end of the decade approaching, it's a reasonable enough exercise to indulge in. Of course, you don't have to read them if you don't like them.

I have seen the Milicic rant in Youtube and it was funny and shocking to say the least. How come Steve Nash two MVP count as a "meltdown"?

It's being suggested as a meltdown on the part of the media members who vote for the annual awards, saying that it was a bad decision on their part to select him as the MVP in 2006. It's different from the other entries but the basic theme is a person or people making bad decisions, losing control or otherwise abandoning reasonable thought and rationale.

If that's the case, the Hawks stocking up on forwards with their draft picks for 3? straight years when they really needed a PG.

I agree it was a mention worth meltdown moment in NBA history. Nash deserving it for 2 years in a row wasn't just expectable. The writer also mentioned about the other players getting less credits due to the popularity of Nash and I also agree that really happened.
