Top 10 Point Guards of 2000-2009

The Article

1. Jason Kidd
2. Steve Nash
3. Chauncey Billlups
4. Gilbert Arenas
5. Chris Paul
6. Tony Parker
7. Andre Miller
8. Deron Williams
9. Baron Davis
10. Sam Cassell

I expect there'll be a few disagreements with that ranking. As for me, I'm puzzled by Stockton's absence. If his few years at the beginning of the decade are enough to qualify him for the "best passers" list, then he should be on this list as well. You could rank him lower given that his best years came in the last decade, but I feel he should be on there all the same. Also, I wouldn't rank Gilbert Arenas ahead of Chris Paul and probably not Tony Parker or Deron Williams either. And if we want to bring the idea of the "traditional" point guard into the mix, you could probably rank Andre Miller higher as well.

The top two are fair enough and I expect most people would place them in their top three or four. However, I think Chris Paul has to be mentioned in the same breath. I'd say he's the best point guard in the league at the moment and even if that list is taking the whole decade into account I think he has to be in the top three. I realise he's in Dwyer's top five as it is, but that still doesn't give him enough credit in my opinion.

I wasn't too surprised to see Cassell in there, but again if Stockton can be listed as one of the best passers then he should make this list and bump Cassell or Baron Davis off the list. Even taking into account he only played a few years at the beginning of the decade and was at the end of his career, sixth or seventh place wouldn't be unreasonable.

I agree that Paul probably should be ahead of Arenas, maybe Parker and Williams as well. The fact that Arenas is a combo guard, makes the choice a bit more difficult.

Putting Cassell in the Top 10 was a bit unexpected for me as well.

Even putting aside the question of whether it's fair to call Arenas a point guard or not (he's listed as one, so I'd agree with Dwyer that it is fair to call him one), Paul should definitely be ahead of him.

Pretty decent list I assume. Cassell had many good seasons first half of the decade, so I think he deserves a spot there.

Without looking into much detail, my top 10 for the decade would probably be something like this:

1. Jason Kidd
2. Steve Nash
3. Chris Paul
4. Chauncey Billups
5. Tony Parker
6. Gary Payton
7. John Stockton
8. Deron Williams
9. Gilbert Arenas
10. Sam Cassell

Obviously Payton & Stockton are great, but at tail end of careers so only a few good seasons each at start of the decade.

Forgot about Payton. Looks like a pretty good alternate list to me.

On point guard skills, Paul and Deron should be higher then Arenas. Also Miller.
And yeah, Payton and Stockton can still fit the list.

I don't entirely like this, but I did it in thirty seconds and it's another suggestion: (the stats are just 2000-2009)

Interesting to see Marbury on there, though by the numbers it's not unthinkable.

I liked Benji list (because he has stats on it). The placing of Billups in 2nd place. He turn can a average team to a winner when he plays. He now becomes my favorite PG.

I was wondering why Allen Iverson is not on the list though, maybe because he is regarded as a shooting guard or they just don't like the guy.

I didn't include him in my list for that debate of if he's a PG or not. Since Dwyer didn't, I left him out.

I think he was either before or after Paul if included.
