The Critic Appreciation Thread

Mon Aug 31, 2009 10:23 am

Is anyone else a fan?

I never got into it the first time around and have only glanced at repeats when it was on Foxtel briefly, but recently I picked up the entire series on DVD and I have to say it's won me over, not altogether surprising given it was created by Al Jean and Mike Reiss fresh off running seasons three and four of The Simpsons. It certainly has similar usage of cutaways that The Simpsons was using a fair bit at the time and Family Guy would later butcher. In fact, I found myself thinking that the way The Critic handled cutaways and its style of humour - which is somewhere in between The Simpsons and Family Guy - is how I wish Family Guy would do things at times. It's also easily my favourite non-Simpsons work by Jon Lovitz.

I can see why people like it, and appreciate it for what it is, but I personally just can't stand Jon Lovitz.

Fair call. Admittedly it's the only project involving Lovitz apart from his Simpsons appearances that I've actually enjoyed.
