StoryWriter-director John Hughes, Hollywood's youth impresario of the 1980s and '90s who captured the teen and preteen market with such favorites as "Home Alone," "The Breakfast Club" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," died Thursday, a spokeswoman said. He was 59.
Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk in Manhattan, Michelle Bega said. He was in New York to visit family.
That's sad to hear, 59 seems far too young these days. Like many I was a fan of his movies, moreso ones like
Home Alone as a kid and then the likes of
Ferris Bueller's Day Off as I got older. I'd also call
Planes, Trains & Automobiles one of the top comedies of all-time, it's certainly right up there on my list. Condolences to his family, may he rest in peace.

"Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude."
Love Ferris Bueller. Very sad news, one of the giants of the film industry in the 80s

Decent montage, but they should've left the scenes intact.

It's not really known (based on the movies he's being listed for in various places) that he helped write or was the primary writer on both European Vacation and Christmas Vacation.
On one hand he didn't write Home Alone 2, but he did write Home Alone 3 and Baby's Day Out.
Also, I can't stand The Breakfast Club. What a horrible film. Somebody inbed the screaming breaking the glass while stoned on pot scene.
And finally, I keep confusing him with John Waters and have been for the last five years at least.
Funny how he doesn't get the same love as Michael Jackson. But I guess he hadn't moved into that "elite" class where we all pretend we always loved him despite denigrating him for over a decade.

Wasn't he also credited (under a psuedonym) for the story for Drillbit Taylor?

i remember that great movie. i personally thought that scene was straight up corny but, i really loved the movie

I wouldn't say it's corny. It's pretty straightforward, not the wittiest gag you'll ever see but the awkwardness of the scene is fantastic, as is the attempt at "manly" conversation after the initial horror as they try to put it out of mind ("Hell of a game, hell of a game").
