Comedy Central orders 26 new Futurama episodes

Six years after getting axed by Fox, Futurama is being resurrected on Comedy Central.

A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television confirms that the cable net has ordered 26 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's late, great animated series to air beginning in 2010. The studio cites Futurama's "blockbuster" performance on DVD and in reruns on Comedy Central as the reason for its rebirth.
...
"When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing -- that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived," 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden said in a joint statement. "But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell."

Adds Groening: "We’re thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000."

I'm reminded of another one of my favourite Zoidberg moments:

"Everyone we've invited is here."
"Also Zoidberg!"

Has there been any mention of whether the storyline will pick up after Into the Green Yonder, or what's the dealio?

It wouldn't surprise me with the open-ended nature of "Yonder". Presumably the movies would be retained as part of the series' canon and there'd be some references to and consistencies with what happened in all four movies.

According to no less than cast members John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, and Maurice LaMarche on their Facebook pages, a casting notice has gone out to replace actors DiMaggio, LaMarche, Billy West and Katy Sagal.

From another forum

So lets see.... that would mean:
No
Zoidberg
Fry
Leela
Zapp
Hermes
Calculon
Kif
Prof. F.

It is suggested in that article that a similar situation happened with the Simpsons and the issue was able to be resolved without the need to use other actors. Hopefully all the voices from the original series are maintained. It's just not the same with new actors.

Hopefully that is the case. I strongly believe the new episodes with flop without the original cast, no matter how sharp the writing may be.

wtf, you cant replace the voices. with andrew on this one, its a flop without the originals

Perhaps there'll be a show of solidarity from the rest of the voice-over "community" and they'll refuse the work, much as they did when they tried to replace The Simpsons' cast. Being new Futurama episodes I'd want to give them a look, but it just wouldn't be right without bringing everybody back.

Issue resolved.

When Fox announced the return of Futurama earlier this year, fans were ecstatic. Shortly thereafter, the network let everyone down by saying they were recasting the voices due to salary issues and a decreased budget.

Thankfully, however, disaster has been averted. This very afternoon, Fox has closed new deals with the original castmembers. Says a rep for the series, "Maurice LaMarche announced that he would be returning on his Facebook page." Katey Sagal and Tress MacNeille's deals are official as well, and a Futurama rep tells us, "[We] hope to have deals with all five by end of day."

New episodes of Futurama should be ready by mid-2010.

Thanks for the heads up. (Y) Hopefully it won't be like Family Guy's revival and quickly descend into "Guess it should've stayed dead" territory.

They should just keep doing movies.
