Marion to Mavs?

Postby Andrew on Wed Jul 08, 2009 12:44 am

Source

The Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors are discussing a sign-and-trade deal for Shawn Marion,(notes) league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Dallas is dangling the partially guaranteed contract of Mavs forward Jerry Stackhouse(notes) to acquire Marion. Stackhouse, 34, has only $2 million of his $7 million salary guaranteed for this season, and whomever trades for Stackhouse can buy out the deal by Aug. 10. The Raptors aren’t likely interested in taking back salary in a deal for Marion, a former All-Star forward, so Stackhouse is an intriguing possibility.

Marion for Stackhouse seems like a steal to me if the Mavericks can pull it off. It remains to be seen what would happen with Josh Howard if that goes down though, presumably he'd move to shooting guard if he's retained as I doubt they'd move Dirk to centre with Marion at power forward.

Screw the Mavs, they already got Gortat. No more players for them!

At this point I would be pretty happy with whatever the Raptors can get in return for Marion since the signing of Turkey Glue means that whatever chance Toronto has of retaining Marion is pretty much nil. Stackhouse would be a solid piece off of the bench, but the Raptors still have a lot of work to do to shore up their bench.

For the deal to work out, another team has to be involved. From what I've heard, Orlando is a likely possibility, with Hedo involved getting moved to Toronto via S&T and another player coming back to Orlando in the process. This way, Orlando and Toronto get something in return for their free agents, Toronto regains their MLE and LLE and Dallas fulfills their pursuit in getting Marion. Everyone's happy.

So, this means they're not interested in Bass anymore. I don't know if they can afford to have both him and Marion on the team. Or maybe Bass will be traded to Orlando. I've heard they were interested in him.

If Dallas signs both Marion and Gortat, they are my new association team for 2K10. :)

I don't see why the Mavs need him. They have Josh Howard and Dirk Nowitzki. I doubt they'd sign Marion on a huge payroll to be a back-up. They should rather pay less and re-sign Bass.

cuban has this problem where he always has to make moves if other teams are, he just love mixing things up. however this would be a good deal for him though unlike many of his other past moves

He could be a good defender and rebound for them, it's true he can't score much, but he is one of the better defensive player/rebounder in the league. Just like Andrew said, he will start, moving Josh Howard to SG.

I like this for Toronto, since they're probably not getting Parker back, Stackhouse could start at SG with Hedo at SF (if DeRozan doesn't) and he is a good perimeter scorer.

Ouch, I don't think the Raptors are going to play Stack, the Mavs are probably going to send buyout money for the Raptors to get rid of his contract.

As for getting Marion, I'm sort of in-between on this. They're killing any chance they had of getting in on the 2010 FA class, and Marion can't exactly create his own shot, but he's still a pretty good perimeter defender, he can rebound and he's going to benefit again from having a point guard like Kidd.

The Mavs should look to fill a hole at the two guard with Stackhouse for someone like Stephen Jackson, but if this is the best the Mavs can get, then they should pull the trigger. It can't hurt to get someone like Marion to make up for Josh Howard's absences

Jerry Brickhouse is far from a good scorer from the perimeter. I do like his post up game though.

Damn the Mavs will certainly be a much more stronger team if this sign and trade pushes through i like the way this whole chemistry will mix up since Kidd likes to play up tempo kind of plays...

He likes it, but will his body permits it? He got a lot slower last season and he will be even more slower the next.

How big of a contract has Kidd signed? From what I heard, it's a lot of money. Anyways, Kidd isn't Nash so I don't think Marion will flourish alongside Kidd. Who knows though...

At least 25M / 3yrs. It's not about comparing Nash and Kidd here, since Nash is useful only on teams that play up-tempo basketball. Now that Dallas is getting older.. They should think more about young players, not former All Stars.

If the deal pushes through, then the West will get tougher again. I guess there's no place for Houston in the '10 playoffs.

Non-believers. (N) I never thought you would turn down on the Rockets getred12, you let me down. :shake:

There's always a place for the Rockets in the playoffs, it's up to them how bad they want it. With the roster they have at the moment, dont underestimate them. Aaron Brooks and his co. will show you non-believers how it's done. :seriouscat:

any team nash is on right now becomes a up tempo team, he is the guy who leads the charge. biggest mistake dallas ever made was letting him go. i agree that dallas should look for younger players, they seem to think they still have a chance to win it all though

They could've had that chance if they kept Devin Harris.

It wasn't the biggest mistake that Dallas let him go. Sure, he was an All-Star offensive point guard, but he had nagging back problems, missed a number of games every season, and had just come off getting burned badly by Mike Bibby in the playoffs. He went to a system that was perfect for him.

The mistake was that they used that money on Erick Dampier.

Not really, Devin was on the up & coming and everyone including Mark Cuban knew that, he just figured that at that moment Kidd was better and bringing him in they'd have a bigger shot at winning the title.

I recall a lot of people on the forums wondering what in heavens name Cuban was thinking when he pulled that trade off. Being a fan is okay, but turning a blind eye is another thing.
