Interest gauging (NLSC internet sports league)..

I think at one point ages ago someone tried something similar to this, but I was browsing around last night getting my ass kicked in Scrabble and had an idea. What if we did sort of a league where people played against each other in various online Java based games, then we keep records etc have play-offs. Sort of like the Sig League I used to do only using various (mostly Yahoo I'd imagine) games as the competition instead of sigs. There's a couple of ways I think to go about it:

1) Have people arrange to play against each other head to head live in these games... the positive is that people actually compete at the same time, get to know each other etc... the negative is that it's hard for people from different timezones to get together at the same time, it also limits the amount of games that can be used.

2) Have people play games individually, PM me their scores at the end of the week or whatever and from there you can either:
- Have head to head games, so A scores 50 on whatever against B scoring 40 on whatever, while C and D are playing a different game against each other also
- Have everyone in the league play the same game, and award points based on the position their score ranks.. the negative is that this takes away the direct competition aspect.

So I'll give an example for those still confused (as I am reading this back):

Week 1:

A vs B in Scrabble
C vs D in Air Hockey
E vs F in Literati

A beats B
D beats C
E beats F in their respective games, thus the ladder would be:

A - 1 win, 0 losses, 0 draws, 2 points
B - 0 wins, 1 loss, 0 draws, 0 points
etc
etc

Does that make sense? Anyway, who would be interested and what method would you prefer to do? Once we figure that stuff out we can start picking games to use.

Playing live head to head is probably a bazillion times more fun than just posting high scores, but as you pointed out ther's a problem with the timezones ..

Or we could make group stages for people with the same timezones so they could play head to head. Like:

Group A would be Europe

Group B would be USA

Group C would be Australia

After the group stages some people would advance and play individually with someone keeping track of everyone's scores.

Yeah the games are definitely up for debate, I don't really play alot as it is so other people would have a better idea of what games would work.

Hey Pera, yeah the groups are a good idea but hard to maintain. I guess one way around it would be to give everyone a week to do their match-up, I'm sure most people could arrange a time for both to be on together at least once in a week.

This sounds like a great idea and I'm sure I'd have fun with it- but I'll be honest and say that I probably wouldn't keep up with getting games played, I have too many hobbies and tend to go on binges for one particular thing for a week or two at a time.

So what does a winner get? More would be taking this serious if there was some sort of prize or something.

The satisfaction of knowing they are the best Java based online game player in the NLSC of everyone who viewed and joined the game based on proving the former.

And a little badge under your name like the one I've got. Only not saying "Administrator".
