It is possible for the referees to change their calls, and it has happened but it should not be because the players argued for a foul. If the referees are to change their calls, it must be based upon replays and discussing with other referees to see whether the first call was incorrect or not. If it is then it is likely that they will take the call back.
I think the reason why so many players argued with the referee is not because they wanted a call change since they know pretty well that that's not going to happen anyway, but they argued to express their thoughts on the play and to partly show their frustations against the call. The effect this has is it somewhat raised awareness in the referees. That's what I think.
