potential/cap space

How can I look at the potential for a player?

Also, how does cap space work? Is it 25% over the cap space?

The only way to definitely know a player's potential is to look at their DESTINY attribute, which is a hidden attribute located in players.dbf. Values range from 1 (best) to 8 (worst). Players with values of 1-3 (especially 1 and 2) are the most likely to develop and improve.

Cap space refers to the difference between your total salaries and the salary cap. If you have negative cap space, then you're over the cap. When making trades with no cap space, the salaries must not exceed each other by more than 25% (ie they cannot be more than 125% or 1.25 x the other). The aim is to get the salaries as close as possible, but there is some leeway to the amount of 25% if they don't match exactly.

Thank you

How do I access players.dbf?
what do I need to download?

Is there any way to change the potential of a player?

You need to go to this location:

My Documents -> NBA Live 08 -> saves -> [name of your saved dynasty]

When you're there, find the file players.dbf and open it with DB Commander which you can get here.

Then you need to find a line with the player you want to check destiny and move right until you find this field.

You can change it to whatever value you want from 1 to 8.

DB Commander should save automatically when you move to a new cell (box) in the database. Otherwise, you can click the tick icon down the bottom to save changes. Note that when you're editing a Dynasty save there are two entries for your player as one is used for comparison in between seasons. You'll need to change both entries.

There are two entries in players.dbf for players on your team. Therefore, if you want to change's Kobe's three point rating, you'll need to find both instances of him (one will be at the bottom of the database) and change both of them to 90.
