Marbury waived by Knicks, eligible for postseason

Postby Robert on Wed Feb 25, 2009 10:59 am

Stephon Marbury was waived Tuesday by the New York Knicks, ending a turbulent five-year stint in which the former All-Star couldn't lead his hometown team to a single playoff victory.

The team released a statement saying an agreement between the Knicks and Marbury had been reached, but did not disclose financial terms. Knicks president Donnie Walsh has said the team and Marbury have been trying to workout a buyout.

Marbury is one of the highest-paid players in the NBA, set to make close to $21 million this season, but has not played a game for new coach Mike D'Antoni.

But D'Antoni never gave the temperamental guard a chance to cause the same troubles for him that he did for Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas.

Marbury would be eligible to play in the postseason for any team that signs him because he was waived by March 1. He has been linked to the Boston Celtics, who are in need of a backup guard with Tony Allen injured.

The statement also said Marbury's grievance against the Knicks had been resolved. The sides attended an arbitration hearing earlier Tuesday regarding the nearly $400,000 in salary the team had docked the point guard after alleging he refused to play in a game in Detroit in November.

He then publicly criticized D'Antoni and saying he could never play for the coach because he didn't trust him. Marbury sought his departure soon after that episode, but hadn't met face-to-face with Walsh since Dec. 1, when he left a meeting after just 20 minutes because they weren't close on a buyout agreement.

Marbury had previously refused to surrender more than $1 million of the remaining $20.8 million on his contract that expires after this season. It's unclear what he gave up Tuesday to secure his release.

The Celtics and Miami Heat are the teams that are most frequently mentioned as possible destinations. Whatever team signs Marbury will get a player who hasn't played in a regular-season game in more than a year.

I wouldn't mind him coming to Maimi as I'm sure the Heats won't get too far in the playoffs anyways. Give it a try and you see good looking trio in Wade, O'neal and Marbury at least in the paper.

Finally Steph can resume his playing career... Hopefully he can get his act together and be a good locker room presence to the team he signs with... Interesting to see who signs him, the C's or the Heat...

The Knicks only have a 11 player roster right now and seriously needs to sign players for the guard position. I cannot release Marbury in NBA 2K9 because the team must have 12 players lol.

For future reference, it's better to post a link to the original article rather than copy and paste the whole thing, perhaps with the first couple of paragraphs to allow everyone to get the gist of it if they don't feel like clicking the link. :)

It's long overdue on both sides, for a situation that should have been resolved much earlier in the season it was dragged out far too long. Obviously both sides had trouble seeing the other's point of view and coming to a compromise but now at least they can both move on in time for Marbury to be eligible for the Playoffs. Common sense or at least a common understanding finally came into play.

Would be interesting to see a possilbe Celtics-Knicks playoff series if he joins Boston.

Finally, the ordeal is over. New York actually is giving Marbury a chance to play in the postseason.

I guess it would still be a low risk for them, if worst comes to worst they can cut him loose but he's yet to prove he's a changed player who's put his baggage behind him. As I said when the Marbury to Boston rumours first started swirling, I'm not sure simply going to a championship contender would change his perspective and approach to the game but there's no denying his talent. If he does go to Boston and can make it through the final months of the regular season without doing or saying something embarrassing - like complain about minutes, shots, playing behind Rondo or Doc Rivers not letting him be Starbury - then things will be looking up for it actually working out and probably his future in the NBA beyond this season too.

Let's see if this inspires the Pacers to do the same for Jamaal Tinsley.

Not just Rondo. They have probably the best guard rotation in the league. Why jam someone like Marbury into it? (Also: holy crap, I never looked at his playoff numbers before. Ugh.)

I read that this morning. Harsh, but from the persona that Marbury puts forward - at least in his professional life - that's the impression I get and thus I share those sentiments. Mind you, it appears that the Celtics have put forth an ultimatum, essentially "fit in or you're out" as Ludden puts it.

If it doesn't work out in Boston, if he pulls the same stunts and causes the same kind of fuss then I have to believe that his future in the NBA is bleak, because that's the last situation that could possibly change his outlook and approach to his profession. When he was traded to New Jersey, it was suggested a fresh start and an opportunity to undisputably be the best player on the team would do the trick. It didn't. When he went to Phoenix it was another fresh start and a better team. Same story. Then he got another fresh start in New York, with the thought that playing for the hometown team of his youth would make for an agreeable situation. Well, we all know how that turned out. Now, if playing for a bonafide championship contender that also happens to be the defending champion doesn't lead to an epiphany and leave him a changed player, surely nothing else will.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it his last shot in the NBA, but if he blows it with the Celtics then decent offers next year will be few and far between.

It's not "Starbury" the Celtics particularly want or need though, that's the problem.
