LeBron's Big Night @ MSG

Postby Andrew on Thu Feb 05, 2009 1:34 pm

In the wake of Kobe's record, LeBron had a pretty spectacular night of his own. For someone who maintained wasn't going to try to equal or beat the new record, he certainly made a decent attempt of it. In the end, his game might even be the better performance (certainly the more impressive overall game) as he finished with 52 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists, making him the fourth player to garner at least 50 points and 10 assists in the same game while rounding it out with the 10 boards for a triple double.

If I heard the stat correctly, the Knicks also became the first team since 1962 to give up 50+ points to a single opponent in back to back games.

EDIT: LeBron also joins Michael Jordan for having multiple 50 point games at the present Garden and is the first player since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975 to register a triple double in the same game as scoring 50 points. The Knicks have sure been on the wrong side of some noteworthy performances the last couple of years, going back to the big loss to the Celtics last season.

Yeah, that was it. What's the bet that both of those 1962 games were provided by Wilt?

Considering the year, I'd certainly say that's a given.

Wilt was the last to post a 50-10-10 in the garden.

I was more impressed by tonight than Kobe's 61, because Lebron wasn't up by 18, still in the game chasing the ghost of MJ

Great game, but.....

Lebron was definitely chasing the record....I don't believe a word he says, the man of the crab dribble....

Lebron was chasing the ghost of Kobe....with the game over, he charged for a rebound that his teammate had covered....he wanted that triple double badly....I don't blame him for it.....I just don't want anybody to think that Lebron did anything better than Kobe....sure Lebron's game was more well-rounded, but in the end both did what they had to do to win....in the end, both were going for personal accolades once the game was secured....

That's what I meant in that sentence you quoted, for someone who claimed he wasn't interested in going after records, he certainly looked like he was chasing it. Putting aside all that though, I lean towards LeBron's stat line as being the better performance, though it's admittedly hard to argue against the magnitude of a 60 point game.

So it's a mute point, Lebron didn't get a triple double....he only had 9 rebounds....still a great performance though....

Come to think of it, I don't remember him getting that ninth rebound and if it's the play I'm thinking of he definitely shouldn't have received credit for the board. In any case, 52-9-11 is a great performance even without the historical significance of being a triple double.

It's not the first time they've done that though and although it kind of takes away that extra something from his performance, it's not inappropriate and it still stands out as a great game.

Many of double doubles are a lot more valuable than triple double, and I think this is one of those case. Too bad though as the history won't remember it that way. It sucks for Lebron that it will just be remembered as 52 points performance. If it was triple double, it'd have been remembered as something a lot bigger for history. However, I think it was a better performance than Kobe's 60 something point one.

Haha, I bet a Kobe fan caught that on replay and sent it to the league. Nevertheless, still a great performance by LeBron.

Perhaps, double-doubles are cast aside too quickly but 50+ points and 10+ assists is even rarer, it's only the fourth time that's happened in league history. It's historically significant and the near triple double will surely be mentioned as a footnote.

Andrew... Are you sure? Oscar Robertson would probably pull something off like that, and especially Earl Monroe at the time when he was with the Washington Bullets when he was averaging 35.7 points per game.

Definitely sure, Tony Parker was noted as being the third player to achieve it earlier this year with the Big O and MJ being the first two respectively.
