And now, watch me jinx Jose Calderon

Jose Calderon is currently in position to pass Micheal Williams' record for consecutive free throws made (97), having shot 83/83 for the year. That achievement already ranks him ahead of Calvin Murphy (78 consecutive in 1981) for the second longest streak in league history. I believe Bird had a streak that fell just short of Murphy as well.

I think there's something about breaking a record. As soon as you break it, you cant seem to go much further until the streak stops.

CP3 only went a couple of games further after he broke the steal records didn't he? Calderon will probably end up the same, but he definitely is a good freethrow shooter and he might keep it alive after all.

So you're saying he is going to miss a freethrow in the next 7 attempt?

Only if the raptors weren't doing so bad so far in the season, Calderon's streak could have meant a lot bigger.

That's why they're one of Mark Jackson's most disappointing teams this season. They have Bosh, Calderon, O'Neal and Bargnani which isn't that bad himself. With those kind of rosters they should be somewhere around 5th or 6th seed, at least they're capable.

Just noticed I'm one post away from my 2000th post.

Not at all, it's just that he's closing in on the record and I felt that was worth talking about because it's impressive. I mention jinxes because I have a habit of doing that to teams and players and while I'd like to see the record challenged, mentioning streaks like this often precedes them coming to an end, so it's a tongue-in-cheek observation of that. I don't actually believe I hold mystical powers; not in regards to basketball records, at any rate.

Well, it could've been part of something better but it's an impressive accomplishment regardless. Micheal Williams played for the Timberwolves in the early and mid 90s, he certainly didn't achieve the record on a successful team.

It's quite an impressive streak, though it's taking longer than expected since he's been out with a hamstring injury (he doesn't go to the line often, but he's missed a considerable amount of games). He's been back for 2 games since injury and the Raptors look a lot more comfortable with him controlling the point. He had a brilliant night against the Bulls (Andrew  ) and and another great game against the Kings.

Here's to hoping he breaks the record (Y) , as one of the few things there has been to cheer for this season as a Raptors fan.

Maybe it helps to concentrate even more when you know every freethrow needs to go down. (I know every FT should fall anyway, but sometimes players tend to be a bit too unconcentrated. )

Yeah, unfortunately he played perfect against the Bulls, but good luck to him, I hope the streak will go over 100.

Being fatigued or getting rattled on a foul can also contribute. Not to mention pressure. Shooting freethrows in front of a big crowd with everybody waiting and watching can cause some nervousness leading to that lack of concentration. The biggest factor is always skill.

Perhaps, but that also adds a lot of pressure to the situation. Being able to rise above that pressure, having good technique and putting in hours upon hours of practice since you first picked up a basketball strike me as being the key to shooting a high percentage from the line.

Yeah. It's actually been mentioned in other sites even before he was near the record. I remember it being mentioned around mid-December in some articles/blogs.

No free throw attempts in the win over the Nets so he's still 83/83.

If you count the last playoffs (5/5) and the Olympics (5/5), then his stetch is even more impressive. I´m happy if I make 10 in a row, but nearly 100 in a row in actual games

This guy averages like two free throw attempts per game. He hardly gets to the line, but good luck on trying to get that record. I wonder how many of his FT's came in late game situations?

He's got a few games where he's shot 9/9 and the like, that's pushing him closer to the record.

As a Raptors fan (I know, I live in Toronto, HUGE SHOCK) I wish Caldy would penetrate more like he used to. If he could get to the basket + his awesome FT% =

But let's face it, the streak was doomed from the moment I mentioned it. Still an impressive streak though.
