Olympiakos Is Offering $15 Mil For Marbury

Postby Clueminati017 on Fri Jan 23, 2009 3:14 am

The beat writer who covers the Knicks for the New York Post, but who seems to double as a one-man public relations firm representing Stephon Marbury, says that owners of Olympiakos are considering paying the exiled Knicks' guard $15 million.

"I will listen to what they have to say," Marbury wrote in an e-mail to Marc Berman. "I will never close the door that has not been opened."

Donnie Walsh said the interest of Olympiakos is legitimate and Hal Biagas of the NBPA is planning to speak to the team's owners on Marbury's behalf.

Marbury may be intrigued by the international exposure that would come with playing abroad, which could advance his off-the-court pursuits.

It goes without saying that the date for the launch of the new "Starbury" product line, as well as the Web site on which the merchandise will be featured, are included in Berman's blog entry.

It might be the best option for him at this point, certainly the most lucrative. Given that he's only 31 I could see him returning to the NBA if there's interest and a decent offer down the road but right now the money and role he's likely to get from Olympiakos in addition to the international exposure may be the best way to go.

I was following this by the end of the season last year. That Marbury was talking about this season he wants to play in Europe for Italy. I can see this happening. Just like his shoes maybe the hottest ones out in Euro making Jordan numbers.

Yeah, couple years or months ago, there was a thread in this forum about Marbury wanting to play in Italy after his contract expires. I wouldn't want to see that as I still believe that he still is a better than average PG in the NBA. However, $15 million dollar offer seems to be the best one he can ever get anywhere, so I wouldn't be surprised even if he takes it.

He's still young enough to play overseas for a year and then return to a productive career in the NBA. If his play in Europe could generate renewed interest in the NBA then it could be a worthwhile career move even if he doesn't plan to be over there for very long.

This will be like the second New York Knick star to go over seas to play for Italy. The first one was Michael Ray Richardson, and he stayed in Italy for good ever since he got suspended from the league back then due to drugs.

So it doesn't look like Marbury is headed to Europe just yet but the Heat, Mavericks and Celtics reportedly still have interest and have spoken with him. The clock's running out though, if the Knicks can't come to an agreement with him in time he won't be eligible for the Playoffs...unless they waived that rule now that teams can utilise their inactive roster in the postseason.

As a fan of basketball, I want to see this guy back on court as soon as possible. I'm sure he can still provide. He should be matured and experienced at this stage of his career. Although, I doubt his stats will not prove to be superstar like no more, he should be able to help a lot of teams in the NBA in many ways. I hope to see him playing soon.

I don't know about that, it seems he still blames everyone but himself for the way things turned out in New York. I guess we're all stuck in our ways to a certain extent though and if another team is willing to give him a chance, good luck to both sides.
