Recommended Television?

Postby Jackal on Wed Dec 17, 2008 12:52 am

So I just read they cancelled My Own Worst Enemy, which I didn't really see coming after just nine episodes...so I'm officially out of shows to watch for the time being.

Dexter won't be back for a while.
The Sopranos, The Shield, Six Feet Under, The Wire & Arrested Development have all come to an end.
I don't know what the status is of In Treatment, but I'm guessing I'll have to wait quite a bit for that one.
True Blood just finished, so it's waiting time for that again.

So...anything worth watching? It doesn't have to be current, it can be old shows too. Might as well give a heads up of what not to suggest...

Two & A Half Men, Lost, Heroes, 24, NCIS, House, Prison Break..

Actually nevermind the topic, I don't think there's anything that'll interest me.

God damn reality TV.

Generation Kill doesn't seem like my thing, kind of tired of the whole War thing.

Brotherhood though does speak to me, anything Gangster or Boston related seems good to me. Thanks Gonzo!

During most of the series, I was actually waiting for some war. It isn't political, it's more about one squadron of soldiers doing the first recon missions leading to the beginning of the Iraq war.

You might want to check out Leverage. It just started on TNT, just three episodes out including tonight's.

Anyway, stick to cable; network television hasn't produced a decent drama since 24 in 2001, which of course, after 8 seasons, got boring and repetitive...

This excludes Traveler (and MOWE,) IMO the best thing to happen to network television in the past ten years, yet they killed it before it even started (ABC put it on the summer schedule, on Thursdays, at 10, where not even freaking CSI would survive for more than a week.) Check it out if you want, it's a very good conspiracy drama, even though they only made eight episodes.

Other good shows: Deadwood, Cold Case, Rescue Me, Mad Men, Californication, Damages. Testees and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (if you're into comedy.) Trust Me, upcoming on TNT, also looks interesting.

NBC is a dick for cancelling MOWE come to think of it. It seemed to be interesting.

I lost interest in 24 after 3 seasons, Bauer is cool and all, but everytime they "shock" you with oh he's dead...oh but he's not. Yeah, no more.

I usually stick to everything HBO, but they haven't really come out with anything since True Blood.

Deadwood didn't interest me after 8 episodes, Cold Case the blonde lady annoys me, same for Duchovny, comedies aren't my thing, I tend to amuse myself by looking at how small my penis is.

The more I read about Brotherhood, the more interested I become, almost have the first season.

I dont think I'll check out any new shows as of now, I don't like following a show and then it gets cancelled. (MOWE), so I'll wait for atleast an entire season before comitting.

Thanks for the input so far folks. Anyone recommend "The West Wing"?

Brotherhood is awesome. It's got everything you could possibly want in a drama. Plus Jason Isaacs is amazing, not to mention one of the very few Brits I can stand.

As for shows being cancelled, it's the sad truth. Cable shows don't get cancelled as much, though. I've seen at least a dozen shows get cancelled these past three to four years, and all but one of them (Dresden Files on SciFi, which, no surprise, is owned by NBC) were on network TV. So yeah, stick to cable (especially premium: HBO and Showtime). Not only the quality of the shows is actually better, the networks actually care about the shows.

I've never watched the West Wing so I can't really help you there. I'm not very fond of political dramas, though.

I'm just trying to find shows that ran for more than 2 seasons and actually ended. Unlike AD and Carnivale.

How I met your mother is a great show, but I am not sure if its your kind of show. Season 4 is going on strong now, so far I like it better then season 3

Brotherhood is awesome, it's really entertaining and the writing, acting and directing are superb. It's a mix of Tony's New Jersey with a bit of Baltimore from The Wire. Quite enjoyable. (Not as good as the two previously mentioned shows, but better than a lot of stuff out there right now.)

Sad to hear it won't get renewed though, that means I have to search for a new show once again. Tch, sad state of television.

I really don't get why they cancelled Brotherhood, it was a really top notch show with little to no competition.

But no, now we've got to sit through more Ugly Betty's and some new show about trailer trash (or so I read).

Guess it's time to dust off the Sopranos dvd's.

Yeah, that's sort of a la Law & Order now. Not really worth downloading, they air those on TV quite frequently.

Mad Men had caught my attention while reading up on new shows, but the whole 1960's thing kinda threw me off. It isn't totally focussed on the development and stuff a la Deadwood, is it?

life on the street is the grandfather of law and order.
I like seeing how those kind of shows originated. it might not
be hardcore enough for your liking. it's more on the psychological tip of things.

Breaking Bad is a good show in my opinion. I am also waiting for Dexter S4. True Blood is way overrated, the writing is the main reason. I hope they improve this series.
