Bonzi Wells Averaging 46.8 PPG In China

Former NBA player Bonzi Wells made his Chinese Basketball Association debut one week ago for Shanxi Zhongyu with 48 points, 11 boards, and seven steals. He scored 52 points and had 14 rebounds, including 13 of the team’s 18 points in overtime, in leading his team to victory last night. Bonzi Wells in China = NBA Live.

The Chinese CBA is just like our old CBA but worse. Bonzi explained his hot streak to the media:

“The coach is giving me a lot of space, in the NBA I was never able to play so freely,” Wells, 32, said after Sunday’s game through a Chinese translator.

“Since college until now, it has been a long time since I’ve been able to play this freely.”

Shanxi is currently in 10th place in the CBA at 10-9, having won two and lost two with Wells in the line-up.

Yeah.. That’s it Bonzi.. You could’ve been averaging damn near 50 in the league, but you weren’t allowed to play freely.. Yeah man.. But this does bring up an interesting dilemma for NBA players. Bonzi’s only pulling in 40gs for playing in China, but he’s averaging 46.8 points per game. A guy like Kobe might get $50 mil to ball in Europe, but if a Chinese team offered him $2 million and the chance to average 2000 points per game which do you think he would pick?

Something not right between the two. I'll get to that later.

Anyway, I dont doubt that article either but 48 points followed by 52 points effort is pretty impressive. If he can play at this level and is also happy about it, I doubt he will ever return to the NBA unless the money is up to it.

Depends on how well he was shooting them. The NBA record is 28 shared by Adrian Dantley and Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt set the record in his 100 point game, taking 32 free throw attempts overall.

My fault, I misread. 48-(14+15)=19 freethrows made.

With his career percentage, he could probably net 19 free throws with around 27, 28 attempts.

Smush will be going to CBA too, if I remember correctly he'll be playing for the Guangdong Tigers, the team that Chen Jianghua is on (injured), and Liu Xiaoyu (lent to Melbourne but was injured and sent back). Smush will probably put up like 30 something a game, considering guys who never even managed to crack the NBA are averaging like high double-doubles.

Considering they're not getting paid like NBA or Euroleague players, they must enjoy being big fish in a small pond and putting up ridiculous numbers.

Yeah, they ought to feel awfully good being able to put up ridiculous numbers. I remember Mike Harris racked up 42 points and 24 rebounds or something last year?

I didn't hear about that but it wouldn't surprise me, it would certainly seem players get that kind of opportunity.

I'm not sure about the numbers, but I know for a fact that Harris racked up 40+ points and 20+ rebounds in the same game while playing in China last year, which drew attention from the Rockets resulting in his first 10 days contract which eventually leads to his contract being guaranteed for the rest of the year. The Rockets are always on a lookout to sign players incase their roster is plagued by injury anyway so..

Perhaps Wells is hoping for the same thing to happen. He's missed out on a couple of paydays in the NBA holding out for more money without any leverage, perhaps a year overseas will boost his stock a bit.

Marbury should consider playing in the CBA if no NBA or European teams sign him up when his contract with the Knicks is over.

Great idea, he should seriously consider playing in the CBA since that's becoming a popular trend among unhired NBA players nowadays. If he put up big numbers, perhaps more NBA teams would see an increase in his value and offer him a place on the roster.

I don't know, I'd say no one really doubts Marbury's abilities to get his numbers. It's coexisting with teammates and bringing a good attitude that probably concerns them the most.

Onthe flipside, the Chinese would be even more interested in the marketing opportunities and forget about all the team chemistry stuff.
