JAZZ

LOS ANGELES-Kobe Bryant scored 30 points, leading six players in double figures, to go along with 6 assists to make up for Derek Fisher and Sadiku Boyes’ “nervous game” for a 105-82 win over the Utah Jazz in the Lakers’ home opener.

Fisher had 11 points on 1-of-6 three-point shooting, while Boyes had 6 points, going 3-of-13 from the field, 0-of-6 from the arc and 0-for-4 from the line.

“Man, I’ve never played for a crowd like this,” Boyes said. “What a great feeling. I felt like I had to put on a show and prove something to these fans, because they’re always so excited about this team. However, coach got me after the game for trying that.”

“There’s no pressure whatsoever when I play here,” Fisher said. “Its just the feeling of seeing these fans again, seeing Jack on his familiar courtside seat, seeing Denzel, all these people.”

Phil Jackson said that the two players will get over it.

“They’re professionals,” he said. “They know how to deal with stuff like these. It’s really a good thing that others are able to step in their place and pick up the slack.”

For the second straight game, it looked like no one would. In their season opener, LA fell behind fast before the reserves came in and took the lead. In this game, the Lakers fell behind after the 1st quarter, 21-20, with Lamar Odom picking up 2 fouls. Fisher struggled and Bryant put up 9 points.

When the next quarter started, Smush Parker checked into the game, and it was all LA from there. Parker hit a wide-open three-pointer, dished to Andrew Bynum for an alley-oop, and hit a long trey with the shot clock winding down. He had 8 points in the quarter alone.

“He’s really the team’s sparkplug,” Bryant said. “Just like that whole second unit, Smush provides a ton of energy. We can really be successful if they continue to do that consistently.”

Parker, Bynum, Boyes, Luke Walton and Ronny Turiaf are considered as the Lakers’ “sparkplug unit,” since they like to run and take guys off the dribble.

“Its like Showtime reincarnated,” Odom said.

Parker finished with 12 points, Bynum put up 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks, Odom scored 13, Fisher scored 11 and Kwame Brown put up 10.

Deron Williams scored 20 points on just 4-20 shooting, Gordon scored 16 and Mehmet Okur put up 14. Andrei Kirlenko was held to only 6 points.

ROCKETS

LOS ANGELES-The Los Angeles Lakers are still undefeated, beating the Houston Rockets 102-85 to start the season 3-0.

Kobe Bryant scored 31 points with 9 assists and Derek Fisher and Sadiku Boyes made up for their “nervous” game against the Jazz with 10 and 15 points, respectively. Lamar Odom also scored 15 and Smush Parker scored 13.

Yao Ming scored for Houston, while Tracy McGrady scored only 17 on 6-of-15 shooting. Raefer Alston had only 8 points, and shot 1-for-20 from the field.

“Unacceptable performance by Raefer,” Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. “We were getting beaten in the 2nd half, Tracy was shooting badly, and Raefer was jacking up (explicit) shots!”

Overall the Rockets shot 35.7% from the field and 59.0% from the line. Los Angeles, on the other hand, shot 46/3% from the floor and 73.1% from the stripe.

It was a tight game in the first half, with neither team letting the other pull away. Los Angeles had a 17-8 lead towards the end of the 1st quarter but Houston cut it down to 19-14. At halftime, the Lakers were up by only one, 45-44.

However, Sadiku Boyes started the 3rd quarter and hit two three pointers that ignited the Staples Center crowd and set the stage for the victory.

Bryant finished the Rockets off late in the 4th with three straight three point plays.

BOBCATS

CHARLOTTE-Kobe Bryant scored on a dunk through the lane to tie the game at 96-96 with 14.4 seconds left in regulation, then scored on a three-pointer with 50.5 seconds remaining in the extra session to put the Lakers ahead by six and hold on for a 118-109 win over the Charlotte Bobcats.

All eyes were on the battle between the number 1 and number 2 overall picks, but Bryant stole the show. He scored 35 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists to lead seven players in double figures.

Smush Parker shot 4-of-5 from downtown to score 16 points, Lamar Odom had 14, Derek Fisher and Sadiku Boyes each had 13, Kwame Brown scored 12 and grabbed 12 rebounds and Chris Mihm had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Brevin Knight led the Bobcats with 24 points and Primoz Brezec scored 23.

Tabari West, the number 1 overall pick, scored 19 points but shot only 8-of-22. He was heavily scouted by the Lakers and hoped that he would slide to number 2.

“We were very hopeful for him,” Lakers GM Isaiah Cruz said. “We couldn’t get him, but Sadiku is really doing a good job with us.”

The Bobcats were up 94-88 before Bryant scored on a three that brought the Lakers within 3. Brezec dunked on the other end, putting Charlotte up by 5. Lamar Odom converted on a three-point play to pull LA to within 2. Tabari West blew a layup on the other end, but the Lakers committed a careless backcourt violation. However, Smush Parker was able to tap the ball away for Bryant who tied the game to force the extra session.

Derek Fisher shot 3-of-6 from downtown to back up Smush’s 4-of-5. Bryant also shot 3-of-5 from long range. The three guards are shooting a very high percentage from the arc, Parker at 53.3%, Fisher at 52.6% and Bryant at 45.5%.

NETS

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ-It seems as if the Los Angeles Lakers are either playing really well or are trying to make a statement. Last season saw the team go 7-22, but now are only two wins away from tying that after a 108-78 beating of the New Jersey Nets.

Kobe Bryant paced the team with 30 points, leading seven players in double figures.

Richard Jefferson led the Nets with 32 points, but was the only player in double figures. To add insult to injury, or rather injury to insult, both Vince Carter and Jason Kidd were injured in the ballgame and never returned. Both plan to take MRI’s tomorrow.

The game started out tight, with LA snatching the lead at 10-2. However Carter and Kidd both scored, and it was 10-8 not long after. But Derek Fisher hit two consecutive three-pointers to ignite a game-deciding 21-7 run to end the quarter.

It was 31-15 at the end of one and New Jersey posted no serious threat after that.

“Statement? No, not really,” Phil Jackson said. “Detroit and San Antonio are also undefeated.”

“We’re just executing our offense and playing great defense,” Kobe Bryant said.

Carter had 6 points before getting injured on a drive to the basket where he collided with Kwame Brown.

When the game was decided, Nets coach pulled out his starters and emptied his bench. However, a few minutes, later, Kidd was re-inserted into the game. Then on a layup attempt, he injured his knee.

LAKERS UPDATE
JOHNSON: GUARD THE OTHERS
DALLAS-Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson has reiterated that the Laker role players must be stopped in order to have a chance to beat them.

"You see six other guys scoring in double figures," Johnson told his team during practice. "You have to shut them down! I don't want to see them having breakout games."

Smush Parker, Lamar Odom, Kwame Brown, number 2 overall pick Sadiku Boyes, Derek Fisher and Chris Mihm all provide Kobe Bryant with consistent help.

"Those guys have to earn their shots, not take open ones."

The Dallas-Lakers game expects to be a high-scoring match, with the league's number 1 scorer Dirk Nowitzki facing the number 3 scorer Kobe Bryant.

DALLAS-It seems that Avery Johnson’s message got through to his players when he told them to stop the supporting cast.

However, they forgot about the star.

Kobe Bryant took advantage of the almost nonexistent defense played on him and scored 51 points, the highest point total this season, to keep the Los Angeles Lakers undefeated after a 117-102 win over the Mavs. Brian Cook scored 14 for Los Angeles, playing extended minutes, and Lamar Odom scored 10.

Bryant also boosted his average up three full points from scoring 30.4 points per game, which was third in the league, to 33.8 points, and became the league’s leading scorer.

The former leading scorer, Dirk Nowitzki, who was then averaging 32.3 points per game, dropped to 29.6. He scored 27 on a hot 9-of-11 shooting. Josh Howard was also hot from the floor as he scored 21 points and 9-of-12 shooting.

But no Maverick could stop Kobe, who shot 17-of-24 from the field and 3-of-6 from downtown. However, he only converted 14-of-21 free throws.

“Free throw shooting has been a problem all year,” Phil Jackson said. “I’m annoyed with it. We have to convert them. We might be winning now but later in the year free throw shooting becomes more and more important.”

During the early stages of the game, Bryant acted as a distributor, like how he always does before taking over. However, none of his teammates could convert. Chris Mihm and Kwame Brown also got into early foul trouble.

It worked for the Mavs, who ended the 1st quarter on top 27-24. But it was a tight game from then on. Brian Cook, who is seeing limited minutes this season, was sent in, and started hitting shots to keep LA in it. But Smush Parker scored on a three-pointer to give the Lakers the lead, 34-32.

Bryant then put the exclamation point, scoring six straight points in under ten seconds to give the Lakers a 55-49 halftime lead.

Los Angeles is now only one win away from tying their win total all of last season.

HORNETS

LOS ANGELES-Kwame Brown and Kobe Bryant both suffered injuries during the course of the game, and the Los Angeles Lakers never recovered in a 96-86 loss to the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, their first of the season.

Bryant scored 22 points before being injured early in the fourth quarter, and did not return. Kwame Brown was able to return in the second half and finished with 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. It was announced after the game that Bryant would not miss any playing time with a sore wrist, but Brown aggravated his injury and will miss 3 weeks with back spasms.

The Lakers were caught flat footed as New Orleans jumped right out of the gate and raced to a 30-18 first quarter lead. A 15-2 run by the Honets extended the lead to 45-20, and it was at its largest at 51-21.

The Lakers would never take the lead in the game.

Bryant led the Lakers on a 16-9 run that set the score at halftime, 60-37. Then in the third quarter, the Lakers came out firing, cutting the lead to 68-55. Chris Mihm’s follow jam with 5.9 seconds left in the period made the score 73-66.

LA would get as close as 79-77 but could not pull ahead. Derek Fisher hit a three-pointer with 40 seconds left to cut it to 91-86, but Andre Miller, an off season pickup for the Hornets, drained a three with 21.4 seconds left to seal the victory.

Miller scored 32 points for the Hornets, which improved to 5-3. Kirk Snyder and rookie Lawrence Washington scored 12 points for the Hornets.

Lamar Odom scored 15 points for LA, and Chris Mihm scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

Next up for the Lakers is LeBron James and the Cavs on the 2nd night of a back-to-back.

ODOM STEPS UP IN LAKERS WIN

CAVALIERS

LOS ANGELES-Kobe Bryant played a limited role, and Lamar Odom stepped in the spotlight.

The versatile Lakers forward scored a season-high 27 points, Kobe Bryant chipped in 18, Smush Parker scored 15 and Derek Fisher scored 12 to help the Los Angeles Lakers to a 105-90 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

This win tied their win total from all of last season.

Larry Hughes led the Cavs with 25 points, LeBron James added 19 and Eric Snow scored 16.

This game was supposed to feature the league’s leading scorer against the number three leading scorer, but due to Bryant’s injury and the defense that he played on James, both were held well under their season averages.

Kobe’s limitations allowed his second-in-command Lamar Odom to steer the purple-and-gold ship. Odom shot 13-of-20 from the floor, season highs for shots made and attempted, to go along with 4 rebounds.

“It wasn’t just me,” Odom told reporters. “Other guys also stepped up.”

Fisher stopped shooting a number of three-pointers and instead shot higher percentage shots, finishing 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from the line. Smush Parker maintained his very hot shooting, going 6-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from downtown. For his part, Bryant shot a relatively high percentage, going 7-of-12 from the floor.

Odom has been playing closer to the basket due to the injury to Kwame Brown.

“He’s really effective in the low post,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. “He was a bit quicker than Drew Gooden so Lamar was able to beat off the dribble down there.”
