Drafting

Postby trubucksfan on Mon Nov 22, 2004 11:15 am

I was just wondering if its worth scouting or even drafting second rounders or if they are as worthless as last years version?

IMO, they're a waste of a pick unless you're drafting from the top 5 or so.

i was trying some tests with the rookie draft pool to see if the ratings i put in the dbf would be the actual ratings after the draft (which they weren't but different story) and found that the player i was testing on, who was projected as a late first rounder, after scouting him at least ten times had improved to top 20 and was gone before the 20th pick. good thing it was only a test cause i apparently scouted him too much and other teams interest must have increased

so now i look at second rounders with good potential and scout them a little more to see if any of the grades improve. i've had players with c speed increase to a with more athletic scouting. so it is possible to maybe find a hidden gem

well yeh u get a few gems, my friends playing a clippers dynasty n he picked like 50th or something.....but his second round pick is like no.7 on his list....a 6-2 pg, skinny but well hes pretty quick n a good passer, so its kinda worth giving em a shot at times.

That isn't always true I found a guy in the late second round with excellent potential, after 4 dynasty years he is my starting shooting guard and he's rated 78, when I drafted him he was rated 49 and a PG. When I moved him to shooting guard his rating went up 7 points. So when I initially drafted him he was rated 49 after training camp he was 54, and then after changing his position he was rated 61 :D

Now he is rated 79, that is a steal! :wink:

i had two nlsc guys who i put into my draft, replacing two guys who were projected early 2nd round. not only did they not get drafted, they were deleted from the dbf. they didn't even make it to the FA pool.

im getting some conflicting stories, some say they are trash but others say you can get steals once in a very great while. which is realistic as not many good people are picked in the second at all or even make a team. stupid thing about second rounders in this game is they get guarenteed money. anymore stories about steals?

IME, a strong, or very strong draft yields a lot of decent players, and even future starters. I've simmed several dynasties already and have noticed that the rating of the rookies when drafted CHANGES after going thru training camp! This holds true regardless of which team drafted said player (i.e. player or CPU). Young player tend to improve more, and also faster.

Although there are some positives to the scouting, I don't try to scout all the player I can potentially draft. What I do is scout the most promising players, and then just scroll thru the list and jot down as many average+ potential I can find. Of course I usually skip the really undersized guys (6'7" C are not easy to wait to develop). I especially note the young rooks (21 below) because they also have the potential to grow.

Here's an example in my current dynasty's first off-season:
* 6th pick, 2nd round, 36th overall, I Kettel, 6'10" PF. 53 when drafted, 57 (!) after camp.
* undrafted. J Caffey, 7'1" C, 54 when signed, 59 after camp.
* undrafted. M Adams. 6'9" SF, 53 when signed, 57 after camp.

I later traded Caffey for a taller rookie SG. Adams is now my backup SF. Kettel is in IL in case one of my big men goes down with an injury.

Basically, in this version of Live, it is now very feasible to draft on need, rather than just draft the best player available. The rooks actually do get better -- even if you don't use the in-season training.

I'm scared to try this, but has anyone let the CPU auto-pick a player in the draft? I'm wondering if the CPU would pick the best player potential-wise or just randomly select from players...

i've simmed through dynasties and let the cpu do it, and while i haven't played with the drafted players (because i was just simming), they actually pretty often turned out good (if i had an early pick, that is)

I usually don't draft rookies out of the second round unless the draft depth is Strong or Very Strong, thats where I got my steal from.

During the season i Scouted 5 players, but more notably i scouted a
7'5 center which was projected to go late 2nd round
7'2 PF who was projected to be undrafted and a
7'0 SF wh0 was projected to be a 2nd pick.

I choose the center for my first pick and the PF for my second. I've played 7 games where the PF is starting and i'm avg 14 pts and 10 rebs with him, so he came out to be a pretty good player.

I traded for the 7'0 SF so i got them 3. =) It's amazing to see a 7 footer making all the fancy spins and cross-overs without losing the ball, i could let him dominate but i'm playing Miami, so i have Wade and Shaw playing along side them. My 7'5 center comes off the bench and is also pretty good inside. I think my team would win the championship for 3 more years. :D
