Do you guys have a go-to-move on the basketball court?

well, i'm not much of an offensive player. I love playing defense and nothing brings me greater joy than poking the ball away from behind or ripping a guy when he crosses over. but i guess to answer your question, i guess while dribbling with my left hand, i take a step in with my right foot, hop back and take the jumper. looks a lot like the chris paul go to move in nba live.

I don't really know if it's a go-to move but I usually do bank shot three pointers and a reverse baseline lay-up.

I'm not as quick as I used to be. So my defensive game is limited to denying other players the ball and just staying in front of them when they have the ball. I can understand how defense brings you joy. You never get props for good defense is never praised enough. That's why I love shutting down players when we play pickup. Awesome when you are in their face and they brick a shot. :)

I also love playing defense, doesn't go for steals and blocks though. It feels great when my opponent can't pass me then they will be force to pass the ball or a jumpshot. But I never heard a good praise for my defense from my coach even though my teammates said that it was a good D.

Steals and blocks aren't all that. It's about being a pest for the opposition player/s that counts.

Good Coaches know good defense. It's the teammates that might be a bit slow.

Well tell that to my coach, I'm not even playing with my team anymore for 2 years. This upcoming year will be my last and the trainers and other players are asking me to join the team again. I'm only waiting for my coach to ask me then I will play.

It feels great when you deny your man the ball. They can't pass the ball to him and just leaves him out of the offense.

Re: What is your go-to-move in basketball?

Postby Doobie on Sat Nov 06, 2010 10:19 pm

I was going to make this thread. (Y)

Anyways I have different 'moves' for different situation. I'm 5'10" and fat, so I'm not super atheletic or anything. Driving in and finishing strong is NOT my thing. I'll never outrun anyone (even though I'm very fast and can jump very high for someone my weight.)

1. Smaller defender (yes I've played many games where I've had someone 5'5 - 5'8' and 30 pounds less guarding me) - I post up and have a very excellent fade away that I can hit from up to 18 feet out consistently. I've even made a couple of fade-away 3's over them, it's just comes natural to me and usually makes them put a bigger defender on me. I try not to post up about 10-12 feet away though, thats my comfort zone.

2. If I by chance get the first step and there is a bigger defender on front of me, I excel at floaters. Kind of like a Nash type floater, except I can use both hands very well. I really never take lay-ups unless I have an open lane to the basket, but if someone is headed to block me I usually mess up the lay-up and go to hard or to soft, basically I alter my shot. It's something I need to work on.

3. When I don't have the ball, I try to run around a lot and get open for a corner 3 point shot. I can sink those all day. Earlier this year I started sinking 3's like there's no tomorrow. Me and my friend did a 3 point shootout at the gym (kind of like the NBA, except one of us rebounded one ball, and there was no time.) and I hit 14/25 3 times, and got atleast 10/25 every single time I did the shootout. Might not be perfect, but for someone who doesn't play organized ball and stuff, not bad. I also hit 28 straight mid-range jumpers in one shoot around. I also made 8/25 three's with my left hand.

4. I also have a pretty decent step-back jumper, I need to work on it though before I use it consistently in a game. As of now I try to limit it.

5. My go to 'assist' move is either the pick and roll with a bigger player who can finish, or driving in and drawing the defenders, and normally doing a wrap-around pass to someone under the basket. With the pick and roll, I throw the perfect little lobs inside to my teamate, and unless there is help under the basket its an automatic score. If that doesn't work out, the pick normally creates enough seperation for me to take a quick jumpshot (which I've mastered.) As for driving under the basket, people hardly figure out that I won't take the lay-up inside, they always fall for me going up in the air, and that leaves someone open.

6. I also utilize bank shot's a lot. If I do take lay-ups it'll probably be with my left hand. I am better making lay-ups with my off hand then my right hand ever since I destroyed my wrist 5 years ago.

Sometimes I wonder how my game would be affected if I lost all this weight again. If it would benefit my game or hurt it. I've gotten so used to playing fat the last few years that my whole game plan is built around it. Surprisingly at my weight I'm about 6-8 inches away from grabbing the rim. But my post-up game is seriously one of my best scoring methods. I can easily hit the bottom-front of the backboard when I jump. I haven't played since I've been losing weight so I don't know how it'll change my game.

I'm expecting some Toney Douglas three point shooting from you soon Doobie.

Nice post (Y) Gives me some ideas with my own game.

I think your size is an advantage if you can take small defenders into the post.

Throwin 'bows. Other than that, pretty much anything in the low-post. I can palm the ball and don't mind hurting people so I'm generally pretty hard to stop there.

My only go-to moves when I used to play were fast breaks and shooting elbow shots from just outside the paint.

We play zone D alot and Im small/quick so I'm usually at the top of the key. If i see a bad shot go up, im usually at half court before the ball has come down. If my teammates have been practicing with me, they get it to me and i have the open layup. Depending on who we're playing though, i may put too much on it.

Since I'm not a focal point on Offense alot of times D's will play off me, especially if im not in the paint. Wide open, they dont even bother to come out, i sink a couple of shots. Covered rest of the game.
(career high in points? 7)

On D alot of wheelchair ball players bring the ball down to their lap before shooting (not sure why). I will block that shit every time despite being the smallest guy out there. After 2 or 3 blocks they'll alter their shot rhythm and miss the rest of the game.

Hm. I miss playing somewhat.

The step-back mid-range shot is my only killer move seven years ago.

Not many go-to-moves, I like to play defense. Getting boards and blocks feel really good.

On offense, I like to spot up for threes and tip-ins off missed shots. But one move I love is a fadeaway from the free throw line, kind of like David West.

Shooting and stealing. Other than steals, I'm a horrible defender. On offense I can't do much else than shoot, because I'm the smallest guy on the team and I'm playing one of the guard postitions. (5'7, 125 lbs) I can't rebound much because most of the rest of my team is 5'10+ I'm not too fast but I'm a crappy dribbler and a decent passer.

I dribble drive past my defender. From the three-point line, I only need to take 1 or 2 dribbles before going up for a layup. I have a 20-inch vertical but I can't dunk. :( I don't shoot very many 3's, but I like utilizing the mid-range game and post game, especially the fadeaway. (Y) Playing soccer a good 8-9 years helps in my passing and on-court vision, and also with defense.

I have a 28 in. vertical and I occasional dunk in an 8'8 hoop. :P  (i lowered my hoop a little...) Depending on how tall you are Axel, you've got a long way to go.

Funny- my 12 years of playing soccer hasn't helped at all with defense. I'm 100% offense in soccer too. I guess soccer has helped with my passing and court/field vision.

I like to jab step, 2 dribbles, crossover or between the legs and pull up for a jumper. That's usually at the top of the key.

Another one is simply 2 dribbles left or right and pull up but I don't often pull that out as have not been praticing much this year as I used to.

I'm not good enough with my floaters/teardrops to call them go-to-moves. :( The X has been saying I should develop them. However, have been working on a drive to hoop, stop in front of rim, pump fake, as I have ball over head, bring it close to body, left legs comes across body to right so I can shield ball and get past defender and layup. If that makes sense. Lol
