Sponsored Jerseys?

Postby IQuessSo on Tue Oct 18, 2011 10:33 am

I apologize if there's some thread about this or something already, but I wanted to talk about it. I was watching a bit of Euroleague, heard a discussion by the commentators about it during the My Player Rookie Showcase in NBA2k12, and saw it in an article on ESPN.

I HATE this idea, yet these articles and the 2k12 snippet seemed positive about it. I do not like it at all. In Europe, I suppose stuff like this is normal, and I'm okay with that, but to me in basketball (or any American sports, like football or baseball) this just seems messed up. I don't like it from an aesthetic point of view, and I feel like slapping an advertisement on some of the better looking jerseys would mess them up. I think it would also mess up what a team's jersey represents. Some teams are known for their tough play, and their jerseys reflect that, and a large Burger King logo or the McDonald's script would kind of ruin the effect, wouldn't it  ?

I understand they have to make money, and that's why a lockout is even going on, but I really hope it never comes to sponsors on jerseys.

Thoughts?

Just watch that enough, and eventually a little advertising won't bother you by comparison.

I'm not sure it'll ever come to that in the NBA but I'd agree it's not a particularly good look.

To be honest, it kind of shocked me when I realised that the NBA don't do it. I'm so used to seeing advertisements placed in Rugby League and so many other competitive sports. Now it's mentioned, it'd look particularly bad on NBA jerseys.

In the PBA, I hated it since the very first time I watched the league. Seems like random sponsor logos splattered all over the jersey.

Also, see Manny Pacquiao.

This ignores all the advertising already on the jerseys. And the court, and the websites, and the shoes.

There's a reason all of these are constantly being redesigned. The "starting over" and "new era" justifications are just that.

The size and value of sponsorship need to make sense, plastering your name all over an arena seems to work apparently. McDonald's wouldn't want to sponsor just the Lakers because they make far more using Jordan, Bird, LeBron, Dwight, etc.

Wait, isn't it that some WNBA teams have advertisement on their jerseys?

but apple is too trendy to ever need any advertisements. steve jobs's death created a web uproar. people on facebook actually made status updates and shit saying they were sad and stuff but if Bill Gates died, no one would care.

What I liked were people posting status updates that were quotes from Steve Jobs.

Who's Bill Gates btw? Some kind of philanthropist?

I believe it's because they need the sponsors because they're not really a billion-dollar league like the NBA, the NFL, the MLB, etc. If they ever got to that level (doubt it) they would probably get rid of the sponsors. The ones that don't have sponsors on the jerseys are normally the sister teams of NBA teams.

Yes, but a small Adidas or Nike logo is fine; on the shoes its perfectly fine because a lot of the time it's part of the design. Besides, Adidas and Reebok and Jordan and Nike and Underarmour are all sports wear; that I'm okay with. and And the naming of arenas is fine, and they haven't yet gotten to the point where they are putting ads on the court (I'm sure that day will come) and that I could get used to. But I just wouldn't want a Microsoft Windows logo plastered underneath the player's number or an auto-repair shops' logo script taking the place of the team's name on the front.

I'm not talking about those. I'm talking about the big one across the front.

Why? Will the logos of those multi-million dollar entities ruin the "purity" of these other multi-million dollar entities?
