no one should feel abliged to give money to anybody under any circumstance when they are not getting anything in return. if an athlete is making millions of dollars, nobody gave him handouts to get him to where he is today, he got himself there

Ya, no coaches voluntered to help them with their games, no teacher stayed late after class to help these athletes pass their tests or even let them cheat, no parents gave up their time to drive these kids to practices. They did it all themselves, no one helped them along the way

Those people get rewarded, not all, but people close to you who helped you get rewarded. How did the bum living in a dumpster help Fred Hoiberg get to the NBA?

Well that bum was a junkie, and that junkie was a friend of a friends uncle, who was a twin brother who married a girl who was pregnant with a child who she gave birth to but decided to put it up for adoption and the adopting family was the coach of the star athlete in primary school so of course naturally the bum deserves to be taken care of for life
Either that, or without that bum, the athletes wouldn't have to do "stay away from drugs" ads and he wouldnt be recognised around the world.
One of the two, I can't work out which one

Thanks Nba_Fan_23 that was both insightful and comical.

You could have used someone who that would apply to...if I remember right Hoiberg came from a well-to-do family in the upper-middle class dominated Ames (hence the nickname 'mayor')...if you're saying he sucks, he was a great college player who averaged over 20 ppg and helped lead the Cyclones to the sweet 16 (I think, might have been elite 8) in the Johnny Orr years...he's been a good backup all his time in the NBA, used to come off the bench behind Jalen Rose and Reggie Miller in Indiana...
He's not that bad of a player...nor is his background the type that a bum living in a dumpster would help him out...seeing as there are no bums in Ames (well, passing through, but they don't live in dumpsters, there's houses where they stay)...anyways...
I know it was a joke...but it wasn't really funny or accurate...if you had chosen someone completely worthless, it'd be kind of funny...

Well I really didn't intend anything by choosing Fred Hoiberg, he's just a random NBA player I chose. How would any bum help an NBA player get to the NBA, not just good ol Fred? Rick Brunson, Shaq, Karl Malone or some guy who's momma had to work 3 jobs. Who ever. You're reading too much into it dude.
And I know Hoiberg doesn't suck, did a good job shooting from downtown the season before last, since last season he had some injuries and didn't play in that many games (haven't checked though...). He could be a good role player on a contender.

It's the Iowa State connection...just thought you could have picked a better player to make fun of

I have his autograph somewhere, from one of his trips to Ames...I might have lost it though.
Sun May 25, 2003 1:59 pm
I seriously wasn't trying to make fun of him... how about Acie Earl then? Now that guy, that would definately be making fun.
Sun May 25, 2003 2:13 pm
Don't bring up Acie Earl...he's a reminder of just how bad our professional basketball league is. Remember his 26 ppg playing for Sydney, Stevan?
Mon May 26, 2003 3:26 am
Acie Earl? What's up with the Iowa bashing?
hehe...Acie Earl...just saying that makes me laugh...guy sucked at Iowa, dunno how he ever made it to the NBA...
Mon May 26, 2003 11:08 am
I think I've said this before but, in the Noyz section of Slam they once wrote this: "We've heard that former NBA player Acie Earl was been calling him self [a nickname like "the dominator" or something, I forget

] how about Acie Earl AKA Couldn't score in an empty gym AKA Wouldn't get the rebound AKA Would get called for the offensive foul"
Mon May 26, 2003 2:50 pm
LOL. I thought I found a relatively funny example in Acie Earl (a guy who got fired from the NBL), and he's from Iowa too? That also wasn't on purpose. How about Rick Brunson, if he's from Iowa too I give the fuck up.
Mon May 26, 2003 2:57 pm
Don't worry, Rick Brunson went to Temple.

The problem is, Republicans wanted him to lose his job because he committed a felony. Not because of anything he did regarding any form of sex. He committed perjury before a Grand Jury.
