Van Horn would be willing to go as long as they keep paying him. (Y)

But then it comes back to the "presence" he's required to maintain with whomever's roster he's on. If the league changes the rules requiring him to be around the team more often he might not be so willing. Then again, like I said before it's a team's perogative to send a player home and let him skip games completely so there might not be much the NBA can do about it despite the rumblings that they would try.

I think that "presence" is that he's supposed to report when he's called upon by the team, otherwise he could just stay at home when the team doesn't need him like you mentioned.

What's a few roundtrip fare compared to 5 mil a yr.

I know that's how it is at the moment, I'm just wondering if the league would actually be able to change the rules so that he'd have to maintain more of a presence with whomever he was under contract with. That's assuming the Nets are able to re-sign him and trade him the way the Mavericks did. I'm not sure Bird Rights would be in effect, but I could be mistaken.

The Heat made Smush Parker go home but they keep on paying him before being waived in March...

Van Horn never declared himself as retired... But it's a bit weird that a team receives a $5M player that doesn't play, just for space... I would prefer anybody that can influence the team (maybe a experienced one) in that expiring year...

I realise that, which is why I said it would be difficult for the NBA to implement a rule preventing the practice since a team is free to instruct a player to stay at home. The question is whether Van Horn will still have Bird Rights if he keeps getting re-signed and traded from this point on. If not, that limits his usefulness as a throw-in since he couldn't be given a contract in the $4-5 mil range.

I wouldn't mind being a bench player on any NBA team and have a role as the team's victory cigar.

Me either, but it would probably be a bit less glamarous if I'd already played nine years in the league and didn't really have any interest in continuing my career.

Melo for LaFrentz and the 13th pick is what they should do though.

It would have to be another $10 mil in filler. :P Melo for Redd or Melo for LaFrentz wouldn't be out of the question though, at least financially speaking. I doubt he's going anywhere anytime soon though.

$1000 is not enough for your legal expenses when they find out that you accepted "gifts" while playing college ball.

they're very strict bout NCAA crap over here: any colleges that give extra help, even as little as driving a player to practice is a violation.

Hey hey, I would play myself to the team, that's my dream I follow and I'll see how high can I get. :P I don't want to buy myself somewhere, if that's what you meant.

no, you cannot receive any sort of monetary or any sort of help while playing college ball. It ends your "amateur" status.
