Van Horn would be willing to go as long as they keep paying him.
Tue May 27, 2008 2:36 am
But then it comes back to the "presence" he's required to maintain with whomever's roster he's on. If the league changes the rules requiring him to be around the team more often he might not be so willing. Then again, like I said before it's a team's perogative to send a player home and let him skip games completely so there might not be much the NBA can do about it despite the rumblings that they would try.
Tue May 27, 2008 2:41 am
I think that "presence" is that he's supposed to report when he's called upon by the team, otherwise he could just stay at home when the team doesn't need him like you mentioned.
What's a few roundtrip fare compared to 5 mil a yr.
Tue May 27, 2008 3:46 am
I know that's how it is at the moment, I'm just wondering if the league would actually be able to change the rules so that he'd have to maintain more of a presence with whomever he was under contract with. That's assuming the Nets are able to re-sign him and trade him the way the Mavericks did. I'm not sure Bird Rights would be in effect, but I could be mistaken.

The Heat made Smush Parker go home but they keep on paying him before being waived in March...
Van Horn never declared himself as retired... But it's a bit weird that a team receives a $5M player that doesn't play, just for space... I would prefer anybody that can influence the team (maybe a experienced one) in that expiring year...
Tue May 27, 2008 12:31 pm
I realise that, which is why I said it would be difficult for the NBA to implement a rule preventing the practice since a team is free to instruct a player to stay at home. The question is whether Van Horn will still have Bird Rights if he keeps getting re-signed and traded from this point on. If not, that limits his usefulness as a throw-in since he couldn't be given a contract in the $4-5 mil range.

personally i would be willing to suit up and sit on the bench all season long if i had to just to get a 5 mil check
Wed May 28, 2008 2:37 am
I wouldn't mind being a bench player on any NBA team and have a role as the team's victory cigar.
Wed May 28, 2008 11:55 am
Me either, but it would probably be a bit less glamarous if I'd already played nine years in the league and didn't really have any interest in continuing my career.

that's bullshit......

Melo for LaFrentz and the 13th pick is what they should do though.
Thu May 29, 2008 3:13 am
they should just trade melo for brian scalabrine and filler
Thu May 29, 2008 6:34 am
It would have to be another $10 mil in filler.

Melo for Redd or Melo for LaFrentz wouldn't be out of the question though, at least financially speaking. I doubt he's going anywhere anytime soon though.
Thu May 29, 2008 7:43 am
they can sign me for 10 mil then trade me to denver with the big scal, i am willing to do my part for the celts
Thu May 29, 2008 11:44 am

Thu May 29, 2008 6:36 pm

Thu May 29, 2008 6:46 pm
Hell I'd do it for 1000$ and play high-school/college basketball.
Thu May 29, 2008 7:44 pm
$1000 is not enough for your legal expenses when they find out that you accepted "gifts" while playing college ball.
Fri May 30, 2008 3:06 am
Busted!
haha
Going back to Carmelo... I was thinking yesterday... what could be if this happens... instead of trading to NJ... to Cleveland with Lebron :O
Fri May 30, 2008 3:14 am
he can be traded to anyone, as long as the nuggets dont want equal value in return

they're very strict bout NCAA crap over here: any colleges that give extra help, even as little as driving a player to practice is a violation.

Hey hey, I would play myself to the team, that's my dream I follow and I'll see how high can I get.

I don't want to buy myself somewhere, if that's what you meant.
Fri May 30, 2008 4:03 am
no, you cannot receive any sort of monetary or any sort of help while playing college ball. It ends your "amateur" status.
