Jason Kidd has passed Magic Johnson for No. 3 on the NBA’s career assist list.
With his 14th assist in Dallas on Sunday, Kidd hit 10,142 for his career. The milestone came on a dish to Josh Howard for an 18-footer with a minute left in the second quarter of a game against Phoenix.
He received a standing ovation when it was announced. Among those on their feet: broadcaster Mark Jackson, who is No. 2 on the list with 10,334. Kidd finished the first half with 16 assists, tying his season-best for a full game.

At 36 he probably doesn't have too many years left in the league (though he possibly could be one of those players who plays into his 40s and is still effective in more limited minutes) so I'd say Stockton's record is safe but just one more season should be enough to vault him past Mark Jackson and into second place. He should reach the mark in about a hundred games less than Jackson, though Magic achieved his career total in just under 200 fewer than Kidd. Still, good company to be in.
