Kidd passes Magic for third on career assists list

Tue Apr 07, 2009 9:54 am

Jason Kidd has passed Magic Johnson for No. 3 on the NBA’s career assist list.

With his 14th assist in Dallas on Sunday, Kidd hit 10,142 for his career. The milestone came on a dish to Josh Howard for an 18-footer with a minute left in the second quarter of a game against Phoenix.

He received a standing ovation when it was announced. Among those on their feet: broadcaster Mark Jackson, who is No. 2 on the list with 10,334. Kidd finished the first half with 16 assists, tying his season-best for a full game.

At 36 he probably doesn't have too many years left in the league (though he possibly could be one of those players who plays into his 40s and is still effective in more limited minutes) so I'd say Stockton's record is safe but just one more season should be enough to vault him past Mark Jackson and into second place. He should reach the mark in about a hundred games less than Jackson, though Magic achieved his career total in just under 200 fewer than Kidd. Still, good company to be in.

Great. Maybe he can catch up Magic in triple doubles as well. I think he's at 3rd behind Magic and Wilt. And I don't think he will remain in the league till 40. I just hope he goes to a contender and wins it all before he retires.

That's probably not going to happen, he'd need 37 to pull ahead of Magic for second in career regular season triple doubles and 20 to overtake him for first in that category in postseason play. As for him playing to the age of 40, I wouldn't say that it's likely but not completely out of the question.

Behind by 38. Only if he can manage average of about 13/season for next 3 seasons. Yeah, it sounds not too promising.

Where do you think he will end up in his career after this season. His contract is over, and I don't think he will remain Mav too long or even be gone right after this season. It'll be interesting which team he will choose. Pretty interesting FA market, with couple declining stars with AI and Kidd.

Honestly, I wouldn't be too surprised if he remained with the Mavericks. They didn't sign him to an extension but I could see him staying there (for considerably less) for another year or two all the same. If they let him go then their only (current) option at point is Barea and while he's been pretty decent off the bench I don't think he's ready to be a fulltime starter at point just yet. That leaves them looking at bringing in a journeyman veteran or some up-and-coming player looking for his big break and if you're going to do that, you might as well keep Kidd around for at least another season.
