It isn't this comment in particular with the fines. It is the bizarre marijuana admission. I could be totally wrong about this, so don't be afraid to "lulz" this statement, but I think the trade value thing is due to teams being slightly turned off to players with bad public images due to team chemistry, marketability and the phobia of another basketbrawl. Granted, due to him not being a criminal, this wouldn't make sense, but this is the NBA after all...

Well, I wasn't talking about other people's trade values. As those are clearly out of wack. Marketability is the only one I see and winning erases that. (And in many cases fans love headcases, see: Rodman) I see no reason Howard would start a brawl because of anything he's done, and all of them probably help team chemistry as I assume most NBA players are down with pot smoking, street racing and "I'm black damnit, OBAMA!"

In discussions of such things, we shouldn't forget Michael Jordan, who was a problem gambler, verbally and physically assaulted teammates, kept himself blocked off from the rest of the team, etc.

There's no need for fines or anything like that, but if Howard does care at all about his public image he might want to think twice before saying and doing some of the things he does and show more respect for protocol. If you want to get technical, slavery didn't truly end after the Civil War - it just took different forms(Black Codes, Jim Crow, sharecropping, etc.). The U.S. allowed its own people to be disenfranchised & lynched for nearly a century until the Civil Rights laws were passed in the mid-1960s.

You're probably right - compromising on slavery was the only political thing to do, but all it did was put off the inevitable.

What the Democratic party did in the South post-Civil War wasn't slavery, it was vengence.

The Civil Rights Acts have nothing to do with voting (the Voting Rights Act travesty I'd consider to be seperate) and lynching (anti-lynching laws), or even racism, they were just acts to strip rights from more people and enshrine more power in the state.
