Williams or Paul

Why? Sure, they are close talent-wise as players, but Deron has NOTHING on CP3 that would warrant him as the better player. Deron is lucky to have his 7.

Well I figured there'd be a few more bandwagon Jazz fans on the site due to their success last season, and well you could argue Williams has been more injury resistant right? (I might be wrong on this correct me if I'm wrong). Also one could argue that William's size will help him more in the long run.. I don't know, I voted for Paul, all I meant was that I didn't realize nearly everyone thought Williams was better, doesn't really seem like much of a "debate", haha.

Paul missed 18 games last year and only four in his rookie season while Williams only missed four games in his first two seasons. I don't think many people would hold that against Paul though since injuries are a part of the game and chances are that even players who generally appear in nearly every game (if not every game) year-in and year-out will roll an ankle or sustain some injury that keeps them out for a longer period at some point in their career.

Really though the only way to determine who is the best between two players is to look at head to head matchup. I just think the CP3 fans are afraid to admit that.

Wtf? No, that's stupid. It's not as if they're playing a game of one on one. Kobe has better numbers vs Jordan head to head but that doesn't make him the better player.

No, Paul isn't 71% better than Deron, but he is clearly the better player, and really there isn't much that Deron at all has on Paul to warrant a vote for him, aside of the only member on this forum from Utah.

But there is a major gap. Williams has 51% more turnovers. Paul is by all appearances, a dominant defensive point guard, Williams is average at best.

Williams is a great point guard, but there are guys easily better than him at the position (Billups is another having a much better season). Meanwhile, the players (at any position) blatantly better than Paul this season: LeBron James.

There is no major statistical gap. I never said Williams was better just trying to show you there is not that big of a gap. Personally I don't care and neither do the players.

Let's pick one mediocre "might be a starter if a team didn't have anyone better at the point"-type player. Let's say... Dan Dickau.

Take Deron Williams off of the Jazz and replace him with Dan Dickau.. and the Jazz would still be a consistently difficult opponent. Obviously, not on the same level as they are now, but not scrubs by any means. AK47, Boozer, Okur, plus the rest of the supporting cast. Still sounds and looks at least slightly intimidating to me.

Take Chris Paul off of the Hornets and replace him with Dan Dickau... and that team is not terribly dangerous, in my opinion. They're meshing so well because of Paul's leadership at the point.

That's how I justify my belief that Paul > Williams.

I have no hard data, so feel free to crunch numbers if you wanna, but it's just my opinion in my own head, so... <shrug>.

Hm... I think the blossoming of Chandler and West can both be largely attributed to having such a phenomenal point in Chris Paul dishing them the ball.

Compared to Kirilenko, Okur, Boozer, and (last but not least) Kyle Korver? Granted, the Hornets you listed are dangerous, and Peja could give them a run for their money, but on a good day, Utah will get them more often than not. You also don't want to offend the Korver fan club.

LOL the jazz need a a good backup pg as it is. You take away Deron and the jazz don't win very many games. The Jazz system is centered around a good pg and pf they just would not win without a good pg.

Not really. Mo-Pete and Peja are average-at-best starters, and like Donatello said, CP3 is a big reason why Chandler and West have gotten so much better.

The gap isn't THAT big, otherwise there wouldn't be such frequent debate about it... And those 4 hornet starters are still pretty dangerous with a decent passing point guard because they have 2 good shooters and 2 good big man. Sure maybe West doesn't reach All-star level, but he'll still be solid.
