OK, guess I was wrong.
I read some of the research on second hand smoking a long time ago (mostly the 1993 EPA report on it) and there were some problems with the data.

One problem was that a lot of the research was based on surveys, and there is no real way of see, for example, if a patient got lung cancer because of second hand smoking, or because of other factors. Not all cases of lung cancer are caused by smoking or second hand smoking.

Also some of the data they used seemed to be obtained by manipulating statistics. For example, they used a 90% confidence interval, rather than the 95% confidence interval, which is generally used. 90% is fine though and it won't create THAT much of a difference, but still, it seems odd that they used a 90% interval, and it seems like they wanted to bump up the stats a little.
There were other problems but I forget.

It was for a debate a long time ago and there wasn't that much research (compared to now) on second hand smoking. I guess now it is probably most likely that second hand smoking is quite bad. Anyhow, I was for banning smoking to begin with.

Alot of research is shady and everyone should look at studies for themselves before believing it just because it happened in a study. For instance when they found out saccharin (sweet n low) has carcinogenic properties, they tested it on rats. Do you know how much they fed said rat? 50 times his own body weight. I swear, if you guys eat 50 times your own body weight of ANYTHING, it will probly give you a tumor.

About the marijuana thing, i think we covered that to death in the smoke it up threat. Diddy and Debiler; yall should check it out there was good discussion of all sides of the issue there.

Diddy, that wasn't my point. This thread is about the legal evils in the world. I merely pointed out that Maryjane is the only legal drug in the Netherlands and can't really be named one of the greater evils. I'm not on a pro-marijuana campaign here, don't get me wrong. But abuse of marijuana is not such an 'evil' issue. A nuisance to the public at best, nothing more.

Well I don't think porn should be banned but you can't deny the effects it is having in today's culture. Pornography is a lot easier to find these days then it was back in the olden days. I think it's safe to say porn is desentizing our brains and giving us false imagery. You have to understand most porn focuses on male fantasties and not reality. Sometimes we mistake it for reality and we either end up abusive or extremely dissapointed.

I'm with you here. It shouldn't be banned, but there are some negative issues, as you mentioned.

Yeah, I'm in conflict when it comes to porn. There's one side that says it's just fantastical and eye candy that give pleasure to the senses, but there's another side that (for sick people) which takes over their lives and gives precedence to porn over real relationships. As well as desensitization and false expectations as Riot mentioned.

This is getting ridiculous. So now porn should be banned? People are addicted to food, addicted to video games, tv shows ect. in that case.

I do not agree with this whole thread. Who are you to decide what is evil and what is not? Why is a cigarette automatically considered "evil"? Why is it that Cubans live over 80-90 years, even though they smoke cigars since 10 years old? This is just running from your own addictions.. By stating the "six evils of the world" perhaps you try to prove to yourself, that because you do not do any of these (or do it rarely) you are all right?
