Hornets accept Villa bid for Young
Watford have accepted a bid from Aston Villa - believed to be an initial £8million - for highly-rated forward Ashley Young
The 21-year-old has been given permission to talk to Martin O'Neill, whose Villa side host the Hornets in a Premiership clash on Saturday.
Young was always a prime target for O'Neill once the January transfer window had opened as he searches for new firepower with the funds provided by new owner Randy Lerner.
The player looked set to join West Ham after a £9.65million fee had been agreed but turned down that move earlier this week.
O'Neill has since stepped up his attempts to sign Young, and Villa's fee will come close to matching that of West Ham - with various add-ons.
Young was initially thought to be keen to stay in London, with Tottenham looking favourites to sign him in a cash-plus-player exchange deal involving Calum Davenport and Wayne Routledge.
But Villa's chances of signing Young are said to be greater than those of the Hammers, who themselves have now signed defender Davenport.
O'Neill has been hunting high and low for new forward talent after the ineffective performances overall of Milan Baros and £9.5million club record signing Juan Pablo Angel - while veteran Chris Sutton is still suffering from blurred vision.
The former Celtic boss has been linked with Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe and Craig Bellamy among others - as well as winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.
But to date his only January arrival has been Manchester United defender Phil Bardsley, who has joined on loan for the remainder of the season.
The signing of Young would be a positive message of intent for supporters waiting to see just how much money Lerner is willing to spend.
If Young does agree a move to Villa, it could clear the path for Baros to join Lyon - who are managed by his former boss Gerrard Houllier.
Young made his Watford debut in September 2003 and the following season was voted their young player of the year - before scoring 15 goals in 2005-2006 to help them regain their Premiership status.
