CPU shoots too often?

Postby shkoller on Sat Nov 05, 2005 11:59 pm

I play All-Star and 12 minute quarters and like a lot people I'm having trouble playing defense with 06. But I noticed something last year and this year: the computer takes shots far more often than a real 48 minute NBA game would.

Eyeball most box scores and you'll see 75 to 85 shots a game. I've never been able to get the computer to take fewer than 90 shots a game, and 100+ shots are common.

Anyone have similar experiences? Anyone find a way to get the computer to consistently shoot 15-20 seconds into each possesssion instead of 8-10 seconds in?

i think the cpu has been like this in nba live. I played all-star 6 minute qtr in live 2003, 2004, 2005 and 06 and the scores/stats/boxscores are like the real 12 min qtrs except for minutes played  I don't think there is a way to reduce the shots of the computer except by playing consistent defense which is hard. :? Maybe we can include in the 07 wishlist "have computer consistently shoot 15-20 seconds each possesssion" :)

It seems that the only way to get the CPU to use the shot clock is to hold off the initial attempt of the point guard to bulldoze his way to the basket by crossing over fifteen times as the player tries to adjust.

After you trigger that dribble collision animation, it seems they'll take their time, but if you let them get past you they'll just go as far as they can toward the basket and immediately shoot, in my experience. This is why I think controlling the defender on the ball is important, as well as the use of the defensive stance (right analog down).

I've only played on Superstar before, so it may be different for other difficulty levels.

Interesting thought. Do you find you have to get to the CPU's point guard before or after the half court line?

I assume you have to guard the point guard with either a 1 or a 2. I've found that the game will punish any positional mismatches (e.g. a point guard can always blow by even the quickest small forward).

Try using a half court trap or a 2-2-1 full court press.

It's not that much of a problem as compared to 05. My CPU is actually doing a very good job of setting up plays and passing the ball to open players. Remember live 05 when everytime certain players touch the ball, they will shot it no matter what..Live is actually doing a good job with passing the ball and setting up plays.

It's the play sets. As long as you are using the default Shooter A, that's what's going to happen. Check out the sticky on realist playcalling. (or something like that) Playmaker has a list of plays for every team or you could change the sets to whatever you want. But as long as you leave them at the default setting the game is going to play the same old way for every team. This game gets so much better after just a little modification.

I agree 100%

The CPU will move the ball around especially if you study the plays and set them up to get the PG to become more of a distributor. The key is stopping his initial penatration because just like in real life every player is taught to attack the basket if you beat a guy off the dribble.

Stop the initial move and he'll run the set play which reults in 3-5 passes on most occasions if your playing good defense. I've had many games where the CPU will actually shoot under 10 seconds on the shot clock because they had ball movement in their offense. The regular plays for some reason with Shooter A as the DEFAULT play makes them take the first shot available way to often and it's usually a SG coming off a high screen.

What's your game speed? If it's 40 or higher, lower it to 30 and see what happens, then tell me what happened after you done this.

full court press....loosely pressure the PG, as in bump him with your player....this should eat up 6 secs on the shot clock. Also, if you play "high pressure" D (give no space) then the CPU will need more time to get a shot off in most cases.

The reason why the CPU shoots too often is because on default all the teams Offensive Team Strategy is on Shooter A thus the team will take alot of jump shots. You can change the playbooks: Team Strategy (offense and defense), Offensive Quick Plays, and Defensive Quick Plays. Depending on what you set the teams will play like their real life counterparts, with Kobe Bryant taking shots and driving to the basket, Shaq dominating in the paint, Richard Hamilton coming off screens and shooting etc. Just go to settings -> playbook in the pause menu. A good website I have found for team specific plays is this:

http://forums.operationsports.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=143467

You can also find updates of very good gameplay sliders in the same thread in the latter posts. In the same thread there are also updated team specific playbooks to compensate for the recent roster changes in the NBA (again towards the last posts). The only thing about changing the default team playbook is that you must do it before each game. Doesn't take too long though as I do this before all my games in Dynasty Mode. Hope this helped :)

Dude, If you go to Playmersplay selections sticky and down load the DBF file created by Dre13 you don't even have to change them before every game. All you have to do is play even in dynasty mode. That's the real deal chill pill.

I've changed the default plays as suggested, adjusted the sliders so that the CPU has a much harder time making shots, and lowered my game speed to 34.

I've also been practicing hitting the rebound/block button when going after defensive rebounds, and that has reduced the number of offensive rebounds the CPU is getting.

The CPU still shoots way too much compared to a real game. But the changes have at least lowered the scores and the game feels much more realistic now.

The CPU typically scores between 90 and 100 on me, on typically 90 - 110 shots. And that's with dr13's playmap.dbf installed.

the PG of the opponent in my dynasty always takes the most shots...like he attempts 35 of them while making 9 or so...

You need to change your slider..increase steal, blks, physical def, etc. will make it harder for guards to drive right pass you and actually set up plays.
