Cavs Discussing Marion Deal With Miami

Wed Dec 17, 2008 10:07 am

Story
The Cavaliers and Heat have reportedly had ongoing discussions regarding a trade that would send Shawn Marion to Cleveland for Anderson Varejao and Wally Szczerbiak.

Miami has had discussions with several teams recently regarding Marion, including the Raptors and Kings, according to sources.

On paper it seems like a good enough deal for the Cavs but given the way they've been playing, bringing in Marion doesn't seem necessary. I can understand the desire to make that one move to put them over the top but I'm not sure Marion is the way to go, especially in exchange for their backup centre and a shooter who can feed off the attention LeBron draws as Szczerbiak can. Of course, you've also got Marion's expiring contract though Szczerbiak's deal also comes off the books at the end of the year and Varejao will be a free agent in 2010, assuming he doesn't opt out the last year of his deal so if they're trying to clear some space to bring in someone else as well as re-sign LeBron they don't need Marion to do it.

On the other hand, Ben Wallace will be a free agent in 2010 as well and a couple of years older so perhaps they'd aim to re-sign Marion this coming offseason and have him as the power forward alongside LeBron, with Wallace out of the picture and LeBron signed to an extension. That all remains to be seen however, in the meantime the Cavs are 20-4 and appear to be in great shape to compete for the championship this season. Even with Marion's talents, I'm not sure that you tinker with that just yet.

He can add some... because Wally is a shooter, but they have Gibson, West, Mo Will, And Varejao can be replaced by Ilgauskas, Big Ben and even Marion

The thing is... the team is 20-4... why to risk a trade NOW?

Can add, yes... but is they start losing by somehow?

I suppose if you bring in Marion it means Wallace is probably going to the bench where he can back up power forward and centre as Varejao currently does and it has tremendous potential to help the Cavs (though whether or not it puts them over the edge would remain to be seen), but you don't want to mess too much with 20-4. Ideally you'd wait a little longer and make a deal closer to the deadline though they probably wouldn't have that luxury since the Heat have been shopping Marion elsewhere. If they hesitate now, chances are he won't be available later on so with that in mind they might take a chance and make a change earlier than a team in their position normally would.

this trade is total trash! all 3 players has last year left of their contracts! miami needs solid C, and Andy isn't solid C, he isn't solid at all! and wally is a piece of trash for 14 mln $. i know that matrix would be traded or his contract would expire, but if we talking about trade, miami can recieve more for marion, that those 2. i prefer some 1 from clips, say Camby, Kaman or Randolph, or Sac pack of brad miller + moore or some1.

I think Marion would be able to help the Cavs. He is definetly better at taking pressure of Lebron as Wally or Andy, eventhough he is not the Marion of the Phoenix days.
For the Heat, I can´t see how this is helping them and they should get something better for Marion.

Ideally you'd wait a little longer and make a deal closer to the deadline

I would say if you want to do a trade, do it as soon as possible. If you wait longer you give the team less time to adjust to the new situation and you surely want to have your team at it´s best in the playoffs, so give them as much time together as you can.

The Heat's problem is a lack of a Big Man in the middle. The tallest guy they play in PF and C is 6'8". Sure Marion can play SF or PF. BUt it's more of a running style PF. Marion can not take on guys like Duncan or Boozer. They don't need to get rid of a scorer. They need to get rid of the log jam at PF.

Cavs don't need a scorer, they need a legit PF. Someone to bang down low. Marion is not that type of guy. Trading AV may be the straw that send James out of Ohio.

i think marion and cavs will mix well. they pretty much got a star at every position if this ever happens. in return miami will get size which will definitely help them. maimi needs to try something else, since wade can't always carry the team. wally and varejao could be a nice additions even though i'd like to see someone better in return for marion.

Sideshow Flop > Marion

The trade won't happen though. It just wouldn't make sense.

Well, turns out that previous report has been vehemently denied, which doesn't always mean the end of the story or speculation but given the timing of the proposed deal and all the expiring contracts involved, the initial report does seem more questionable. It wouldn't surprise me all that much if Marion is gone by the deadline though with his contract coming off the books the Heat could still profit from holding onto him and then letting him walk.

That was posted on Yahoo! Sports. I heard about that last night after basketball practice, and what was said that the trade was bad due to the fact there were no big man involved. That was coming from one of the staffs from Cleveland, and they need Andersen to beef up the rebounding interior with Wallace & Ilgauskas.
