Music library program

Thu Aug 14, 2008 4:03 pm

I'm sick of my WMP being so slow...

Does anyone have/know of any music library programs that are:
- free
- use low memory
- have an easy way of updating the library

iTunes works well for me. I believe WinAmp is still around too, haven't used it for ages though.

winamp for sure

Yea Itunes keeps me happy... I've used it for 5 years now not one complaint.

Lowest memory usage of anything, plays pretty much every format. EXTREMELY customizable. As such the preferred Windows audio player of many audiophiles.

(The screenshots on the site are very basic, you can choose colors and a font/font size for everything and add countless plugins.

iTunes is the source of all evils of this world, if I was using a music library that's the last one I would ever use.

I use Winamp and its pretty good

Anything particular reason? I only started using it when I got my iPod but all the same it gets the job done, I haven't had any problems with it.

Because it's made by Apple ;)

Itunes on PC is the biggest memory eater and least customizable piece of shit i've ever used. Its much less of memory hog its in mac version so its not quite as bad. I used winamp for alot of years and it was fast, fun (lots of downloadable skins), and played everything clearer than WMP.

When I had a PC, I hated iTunes too. Like you said, it's faster on a Mac. Typically, Apple software on Windows is just not that great. Then again, Windows software on Windows isn't that great either. I'm going to shoot myself over Vista's version of Word 2007. That is an awful program.

Not at all, as I previously explained in the "Letting Off Steam" thread, I absolutely love my Nano but I despise the interface that Apple "forces" you to use in order to enjoy all the device's features. Yes, there's plenty of free utilities out there to use instead of iTunes, but out of the several ones that I tried so far, none could fully exploit all the iPod's features, and because iTunes would automatically detect that I had been using other programs, it would lock everything and the only way to make it work again was to format everything and encode all the fucking 1000 songs again...That happened 3 times to me. I usually know my way around bullshit like that but even I couldn't get past it.

That, plus:

And so many other reasons: automatic artwork downloads that don't work (and having to register online first), program updates that do not install properly half of the time but still install side programs that are particularly suspicious (e.g. the "Bonjour" program without which it won't work on my laptop or desktop), uninstallation that leaves plenty of traces and the Windows registry and can sometimes have fucked up side effects (a known issue after uninstalling: my DVD drive was not detected anymore and I had to erase a system file to have it recognized again),....

I use iTunes to add tracks to my iPod because from experience, there's pretty much no choice, but I would definitely never use it for any other purposes.

Wrong please. Office 2007 is the hottness. A true victory for mankind.

/agree....if there was a third party program or other way to do it i certainly would. I love my ipod and my mac like they're my children, but itunes is just not kept up well enough or customizable enough for me to enjoy it. Playlists for people with alot of songs should not have take hours to make but the only way to make a playlist will take me at least an hour on itunes at this point. its quite annoying actually

Fair enough. That's mostly what I use it for too, more often than not I listen to my iPod instead so the only times I have iTunes open is to transfer songs/Podcasts or while I'm charging my nano. It's not as often I listen to music on my PC these days.

You're the only person I've ever heard praise office 2007. All I hear around my campus are complaints about it.

Sat Aug 16, 2008 3:55 pm

Maybe they shouldn't fear and hate things they don't understand.

Sun Aug 17, 2008 12:27 am

I think you're the only guy who can adapt to any kind of program and be skilled at it, no matter how poorly designed it is :)

Sun Aug 17, 2008 3:03 am

What's wrong with it? Works fine for me.

Sun Aug 17, 2008 3:14 am

Yup, does what it's supposed to do, never had any issue with it.

Sun Aug 17, 2008 3:35 am

It works as in it functions, but the way the menus are arranged and structured is terrible. At least from this designer's perspective.
